Streets: El Mac (Mexico) Part II

A while back, we posted up some photos of a mural El Mac painted for the Seres Queridos project in Mexico. The street artist, known for his signature striation and large-scale murals recently shared new photos of another piece from the same series based on Manuel Lee Chang, known locally as “el Chino”(despite the fact that he’s of Korean descent) with his Guacamaya (Macaw). Take a look at more photos after the jump…

Streets: Basel Week Miami ’10 Overview (Part II)

With more murals than you can count at this year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, here is part two (see part one here) of our overview starting with the classic combination of Mac & Retna (who also had a solo show at Primary Projects). Take a look at the results of other artists’ hard work after the jump including Os Gemeos, Ekundayo, Chris Stain, Aiko, Roa, and more…

Streets: El Mac (Mexico)

El Mac, who just showed at Joshua Liner Gallery with Damon Soule (covered), recently threw up a massive mural in Campeche, Mexico. The piece is the second in a series of murals he is working on for the Seres Queridos project which celebrates the unique Dia de los Muertos tradition. More detailed views after the jump…

Streets: Downtown LA Graffiti Mural Mini Tour

This past weekend, AM (along with our good friend Jasper Wong) was lucky enough to go on a mini tour of the murals in downtown Los Angeles, hosted by one of LA’s finest photographers – Estevan Oriol (after he gave us a tour of his spectacular studio that he shares with Mister Cartoon…more on that later). The piece that you see above is by Mister Cartoon and Toomer.  It is one of LA’s most famous murals and has been the background for countless photographs and […]

Studio Visits: Retna

AM rarely experiences the sensation of studio envy, but the pang certainly hit us upon arriving at Retna‘s abode and work space. It was pretty much a “Holy Guacamole!” moment. And we don’t even like Robin. The studio in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles apparently measures some 3,500 square feet. We immediately knew it would be perfect for the AM team training sessions in preparation for the international synchronised hula hooping championships. Unfortunately, Retna wasn’t very keen on the idea of subletting to […]

Openings: El Mac & Damon Soule – “The Humble and Sublime” & “Tessellating Pigments” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We are a little late with this but we stopped by the Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago to check out the joint show from Mac and Damon Soule. You may remember the pictures we posted of the street piece Mac gifted New York with while he was in town, but equally impressive were the large paintings he bought for the galllery entitled “The Humble and Sublime”, all inspired by the people he encounters on his travels. Not only does his signature patterned technique […]

Streets: El Mac Mural in Chelsea

When El Mac was in town for his show “The Humble and Sublime” at Joshua Liner Gallery last week, he also laid down some work in the streets of New York. He labored through both rain and shine to create this little gem on the corner of 10th Ave & 26th St. in Chelsea. We like the radiant glow that this piece exudes. Check out more images of the completed piece after the jump.

Preview: El Mac / Damon Soule @ Joshua Liner Gallery

In the wake of a striking Dave Kinsey exhibit (covered), Joshua Liner Gallery is set to show a pairing of two technically proficient, yet stylistically disparate artists on Thursday, October 14th. In Gallery I, El Mac’s The Humble and Sublime (teased) will serve as the Phoenix-based artist’s first solo with the NYC gallery, highlighting his unique figurative works. Known for his fantastically rendered and massively scaled street murals (covered), this exhibit will provide an opportunity for the multi-talented artist to show how he throws down […]

Teaser: El Mac – “The Humble and Sublime” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

After an extensive tour around the world, with sweet murals dropped on every location, it seems that El Mac has settled down to work on a new body of indoor work. “The Humble and Sublime” will open October 14th at the Joshua Liner Gallery and will be his first show in New York. Take a look at more photos of him preparing for the show in his studio after the jump…

Streets: Mac in Hawaii, Singapore, and Vietnam

It looks like Mac, whose work in Ireland we recently posted, has been doing a lot of traveling. In short succession, he hit up Hawaii, Singapore and Vietnam, all with some site-specific imagery done with his luminous and signature expanding spirals. More images after the jump…
