Streets: Meggs (Los Angeles)

Recently in Los Angeles, Meggs teamed up with mobile game company Com2uS to paint an expansive mural promoting new and original content surrounding Summoners War. The new piece covering 2000 square feet of wall in Downtown LA (568 South Sante Fe Ave) features well known characters from the game such as Arch Angel, Dragon, and Angelmon rendered in the Melbourne-based artist’s signature aesthetic. Openings: Christian Rex van Minnen – “Golden Memes” @ Robischon Gallery

AM recently joined the masses at Robischon Gallery for the January 15th opening of Christian Rex van Minnen’s Golden Memes. The show is a homecoming for the New York-based artist, who brought his grotesque re-imagining of the Dutch Golden Age to Denver. The exhibition includes ten pieces of new work, most large in scale, making the bizarre imagery even more powerful. The show will be on display until March 7th, so stop by for a look yourself if you are in the area. Discuss Christian Rex van Minnen here.

Studio Visits: Ben Venom

Last year, during a visit to San Francisco, AM got to visit the studio of artist Ben Venom. His unconventional approach to art making through traditional quiltmaking and embroidery practices first caught our eye a few years ago. Using heavy metal iconography in the form of cut-up t-shirts, Venom plays both hard and soft together by recontextualizing heavy imagery with soft fabrics in the form of quilts. Working from his home studio in the Upper Haight, Venom greeted us in a HM t-shirt and baseball cap. He fell into […]

Streets: Greg “Craola” Simkins x Lyte (Redondo Beach)

After a successful showing that opened last month in Los Angeles (covered), Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) went back to his roots recently and painted something on the streets of Redondo Beach. Collaborating with Lyte, a fellow crew member from CBS/WAI, the duo beautified the wall with their letterforms while throwing out a shout out to 2SHAE in the process. More photos below… Photo credit: Birdman Photos. Discuss this Greg “Craola” Simkins here.

Upcoming: Dustin Yellin x New York City Ballet

Coming up in February, the New York City Ballet will be collaborating with their third artist – Dustin Yellin (also see Faile & JR) – in series of special shows. Bringing sculpture into the arena of dance, the performances will feature the Brooklyn-based artist’s signature “window sandwiches” featuring the human form created out of collaged elements. The new pieces, which are extensions of his ongoing Psychogeographies series, will have his subjects put into motion, a nod toward the dancers and their craft. The NYCB third presentation of their Art […]

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Impromptu” @ Fundación Proa

In December, Cai Guo-Qiang opened his latest exhibition at Fundación Proa in Buenos Aires, his first solo showing in Argentina. Impromptu is a new series of works inspired by his time in the country, which has been at the same time baffling, illuminating, and liberating for his artistic vision. Included are pieces created in collaboration with the National University of Arts and teachers and students of the Municipal Institute of Ceramics of Avellaneda featuring his signature gunpowder drawings, a ceramic creeper that hangs through the library, nine ceramic figurines […]

Art Focus: Odeith

We recently came across the work of Odeith and his mind-bending form of anamorphic graffiti that seems to leap out at you from certain vantage points. The Lisbon-based artist operated a tattoo parlor for a while but has since returned to art full time including commissioned work with brands such as London Shell, Kingsmill, the Coca-Cola Company, Estradas de Portugal, Samsung, Sport Lisboa e Benfica (football club) and several Portuguese city halls such as Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and Câmara Municipal de Oeiras, amongst others. Take […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Tom Fruin @ AQUA (Paul Loya Gallery)

While walking through the Aqua Art Fair (covered) during Basel Week Miami, we were delighted to come across the work of Tom Fruin at the Paul Loya Gallery booth. Although we were familiar with his amazing stain glass installation pieces (see 2014, 2012), we were not aware of the versatility of the Brooklyn-based artist. On display were metal works fashioned into cop cars and grids as well as a quilt made from found drug bags. Take a look at more photos below… See all our coverage of Basel […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Swoon

Along with a large installation piece as part of The Dean Collection at SCOPE Miami and an underwater art extravaganza at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel pool, Swoon (interviewed) also presented a new mural for her fans that made it out to Basel Week Miami. Housed in the prestigious Wynwood Walls complex, the large wall will be preserved for future travelers. Take a look at more photos below… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Showing: Soey Milk – “SINAVRO” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Currently on view at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is a solo show from Soey Milk entitled SINAVRO, which is a pure Korean word translated loosely to mean “to progress slowly, almost imperceptibly.” Those who have followed evolution of the young Los Angeles-based artist’s work certainly have seen a move toward richer backgrounds and more intricate detailing in her feminine portraiture. Head over before January 10th if you want to check out her new paintings and drawings as well as a few purely abstract pieces that seem […]
