Tracey Emin Lights Up Times Square

Every night this month, at 11:57 pm, Time Square in New York will be lit up with work from Tracey Emin. The English artist’s iconic “neon” messages will spell themselves out over three minutes, digitally animated (which can be purchased as s[edition]) on 40 screens of different sizes placed all around the famous intersection in Midtown Manhattan. Late last month, the Lazarides’ Rathbone Place in London hosted Dan Witz’s solo debut with the gallery with a show entitled Prisoners 2012 – 2013. As the title suggests, the new body of work was mainly focused on a series where the NY-based artist partnered with Amnesty International, the world’s largest human rights organization, to create works featuring individuals who are subjects of their campaign for rights awareness. Last weekend, The Outsiders in London hosted the opening for Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) latest solo show. Entitled A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win, the new body of work featured mostly a series of studies that the UK-based painter labels his “morning glories” and which he uses to prepare for his large scale paintings (like the ones he did for a showing in 2012). Last week, How & Nosm brought their outdoor graffiti talents from the streets into Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s brand new pop-up space in the heart of Chelsea. Entitled Late Confessions, this series of works are reflective of their unique multi-cultural heritage. Openings: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery welcomed in Victor Castillo for his new solo show entitled Under Heavy Measures. The new body of work included pieces on paper and canvas, sketches, and some sculptures that look like they came straight out of his paintings including the LA-based artist’s signature red sausage noses (see video). Attendees were treated to vivid and troubled imagery juxtaposing the innocence of children and an illustrative style with dark subject matter fraught with ominous creatures, political overtones, and violence. Another week, another Streets: World Roundup. For this edition, our headlining mural is from the Los Angeles-based Andrew Hem (interviewed). This latest piece located on the rooftops of Koreatown features a break dancing character painted with a background that is meant to blend in with the sky under certain conditions. Over the weekend, AM was invited to a special event presented by New Image Art & Robert Galstian at RETNA’s (featured) studio timed nicely to coincide with the Art Los Angeles Contemporary.
