Streets: Shepard Fairey – “Rise Above Rebel Woman” (Paris)

Shepard Fairey (featured) and the OBEY crew were recently in Paris for a new mural put together by the Mairie of 13th district, Mehdi from Galerie Itinerrance and Butterfly. The piece was part of a unfunded regeneration project of the area, called Street Art 13, which given has huge walls to many international artists. For those who haven’t seen them yet, you have until June 30th to check out nine visually intriguing sculptures from Venezuelan-American artist Rafael Barrios in New York. Featured in the Park Avenue Malls between 50th and 68th Streets, the slender works play like an optical illusion and almost appear like digital effects when seen in photos. Featured as our Art Focus artist back in May (here), Sao Paulo-based street artist Eduardo Kobra has traveled to New York City for a mural project. The two-level public art piece features his remix of the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph from the V-J celebrations in Times Square marking the end of U.S. hostilities with Japan. Streets: Conor Harrington – “Gonna Take My Problems to the United Nations” (London)

After a recent foray into the town of Grottaglie in Italy to kick off the FAME Festival with a series of impressive murals, Conor Harrington (interviewed) returns to the UK and promptly works on another large scale wall with his usual referencing of colonial imagery. The new work, created in his distinctive combination of abstract and photorealistic rendering, is located on Whitecross Street in London and is entitled Gonna Take My Problems to the United Nations. Leading this week’s world roundup of street activity is this new mural from Specter (source). The storefront looks amazingly real and was painted for the Bushwick Five Points Festival in Brooklyn. Another weekend, another Rewind feature here on AM. Leading off our summary of videos this week is the inspiring story (from The Guardian) of Syrian cartoonist Ali Farzat, who founded Syria’s first satirical weekly, Ad Domani. In August 2011, he was attacked by Bashar al-Assad’s militia who broke his hands to stop him from drawing Assad. This week’s Art Focus is on Belgian photographer Frieke Janssen. Among her many projects, one in particular is titled simply Smoking Kids, which was inspired after seeing a YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler. She states “The video highlighted the cultural differences between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. It looks like Phlegm, like many street artists, is taking advantage of the good weather to get up on as many walls as he can. Not long after a series of Waterways, he now has a couple more to add, this time in Bantry, West Cork (Ireland).
