Streets: Jeff Soto (Los Angeles)

Last week, Riverside native Jeff Soto (interviewed) headed to Los Angeles to paint a mural (invited by Juxtapoz) for Converse and their Wall to Wall program. Set in South Central L.A. on Slauson Avenue where some of his ancestors originally settled, Soto decided to do something as a tribute to them. Working on the piece over the course of two days, he decided to go with one of his familiar owl motifs. He states: “The Owl is a symbol of age and experience, a matriarch or patriarch of the […]

Streets: Nychos @ Livin’ Streets Festival (Austria)

Austrian street artist Nychos recently painted a new mural for the Livin’ Streets Festival (curated by INOPERAbLE) in his hometown of Graz. Bringing Puff, the Magic Dragon to life on the side of a tall building, The Weird crew member made sure to add his dissected touch to the beast. Other artists who were invited include Jaz, Ever, Evoca1, Axel Void, Frau Isa, Stinkfish, Livil, David Leitner, Street Art Communication, Searok, Costwo, and Alexis Diaz. You can check out more photos here. Photo credit: PICKS & Nychos. […]

Art Focus: Jessica Stoller

Our next Art Focus feature is on sculptor Jessica Stoller and her provocative porcelain works. Her ornate, Rococo-influenced creations take a traditional medium and add a modern twist to it. The mix of decadent foods, masked characters, signs of decay, BDSM references, voluptuous body parts – all piled to together – challenge the viewer to find beauty in the grotesque. Some of her most effective work comes in the form of still lifes, but instead of painted, are composed of a selection of her unexpected deviant sculptures […]

Sketchbook: James Jean

Fans of James Jean (interviewed) may remember his recent work with Linkin Park on the cover of their new album (covered). While wokring on the concepts and fleshing out the imagery for that project, the gifted artist filled up one of his sketchbooks with some pretty amazing drawings. Take a look at more photos over on Hypebeast as well as some more samples below… Photo credit: Sean Marc Lee / Hypebeast. Discuss James Jean here.

Streets: World Roundup (Jul 7 – Jul 20)

A review of recent public works for our Streets World Roundup sees this new mural (seen above) from Shok-1 as one of the standouts. Entitled  The Consumer, the new piece makes a clever modification in the Pac-Man imagery that we are used to and again highlights the sublime translucent x-ray spraycan technique from the London-based artist. Other notable walls come from Know Hope x 2501 – Austria, Gaia – South Carolina, Cyrcle. – Poland, Borondo – UK, Aaron Li-Hill – New Jersey (source), Faith47 – […]

Rewind: Jul 7 – Jul 20

Time for another Rewind feature here on AM. Leading things off is a new video from the Wall Street Journal profiling Os Gemeos and their stunning new exhibition (covered) in Sao Paulo. Along with footage of the paintings and installations, the Brazilian twins talk about how their work is like a portal into the subconscious, the moment right before falling asleep. Other notable videos for your perusal include: Skateboard paintings by Matt Reilly (via TWBE). Ludo – The Chaos Theory. Art in video games with […]

Streets: ROA (Belgium)

Prolific world traveler ROA hardly has time to be in his home country, but it looks like he recently was in Belgium for the North West Walls project. We already touched on the event here for another artist, but now we have some photos to share from the anatomically obsessed street artist as he painted stacked containers at one of the country’s biggest music festivals. Take a look at an interview he gave here and check out some of the other artists’ efforts here. Photos via BA Street […]

Art Focus: Rafael Gómezbarros – “Casa Tomada”

If you have an insect phobia, you probably did not click through to read this article. For those who made it here, the swarms of ant sculptures you see are from Rafael Gómezbarros and his Casa Tomada project, traveling installations that have shown all over the world since 2007. The urban interventions are meant to represent displacement of peasants in his native Columbia due to war and violence, themes that resonate in one form or another in any country his work is displayed in. Crafted from tree […]

Streets: DALeast (Poland)

A couple days ago, DALeast sent over images of a new mural he painted for the Street Art Doping Project in Warsaw, Poland. Entitled Dormant Antennae, the striking new mural featuring a falcon perching on a cobra that was painted to channel up to an antennae on the roof. This time around after taking a long look at the building, the Chinese artist wanted to create an older looking piece that would appear like it had been part of the structure for a long time. We […]
