Yoshitomo Nara x YNG Collaboration – Basel Week Switzerland

Just as he did for his museum show at the BALTIC, LA show last year, and show in NY this year, Yoshitomo Nara teams up with YNG to present another stunning installation at this year’s Art Basel (Switzerland) in what appears to be joint venture between Blum & Poe, Marianne Boesky Gallery, and Tomio Koyama Gallery.  The distinctively Nara structure was seen at Art Unlimited, the exhibition for projects that transcend the classical art, including video projections, large-scale installations, massive sculptures and live performances.  More […]

Openings: Slinkachu – “Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow” @ Andipa Gallery

Anyone who has watched the recently released movie “Watchmen” will recognize the themes behind images of fat and balding superheros in miniature photographer and artist Slinkachu’s newest show. AM brings you coverage from the special preview of his show “Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow” at Andipa Gallery. The UK “street” artist, who first gained fame for his “Little People Project” (photographs of tiny models in the streets of London), named this show after Alan Moore’s similarly named book which explores what happens to […]

Openings: Josh Keyes – “Sprout” @ David B. Smith Gallery

AM made the trip out to Denver this past weekend to check out the much anticipated solo show entitled “Sprout” from one of our favorite artists, Josh Keyes, at the David B. Smith Gallery. It was great to finally see the pieces in person since we only had studio shots up till this point. Josh was also kind enough to sign some show cards for our readers. Read on for our in-depth look at the show, details of the giveaway and see all the photographs, […]

Ai Yamaguchi x Shu Uemura Mural

On a recent trip to the Bay Area, we randomly wandered into a Shu Uemura boutique on Fillmore Street. Although we knew that Ai Yamaguchi has done work with the popular Japanese cosmetic line in the past, we didn’t realize that she had painted a huge mural for this location several years back. For those hungering more for her work since we brought you the opening of her Roberts and Tilton show last year, check out all the photos of this stunning mural after the jump…

Releases: Kozyndan x PUMA Line

An artist duo that we have been following for a long time now, Kozyndan (Kozy & Dan) collaborated with PUMA on a clothing and shoe line a while back. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a Europe-only release and fans in the States never got a chance to snatch some of these items up…  until now. Here is a shot of a window display at the PUMA store on the 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica. It appears that other stores will be carrying the line as […]

Openings: Souther Salazar – “Last Year’s Man” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Souther Salazar opened his show “Last Year’s Man” at Jonathan Levine Gallery last weekend with a huge body of quality works. We were completely overwhelmed by the various mediums/media that entranced our senses. Known for his melancholy characters that seem simple at first glance, further inspection reveals a veritable “world within a world” complexity. Souther seemed to have the audience in mind when creating his works, as there was literally something to appeal to almost every art enthusiast. There were large wood panels, a video […]

Showing: Damien Hirst – “Requiem” @ Pinchuk Art Centre (Kiev, Ukraine)

Billed as the largest collection of Damien Hirst’s work ever exhibited, the show “Requiem” opened at Pinchuk Art Centre last Saturday, April 25th in Kiev, Ukraine. Hirst will be showing his retrospective of over 100 works dating from 1990 to 2008 at steel billionaire Victor Pinchuk’s namesake museum including not only the sculptures and installations that he is famous for, but also a collection of oil paintings, most of which have never been exhibited. For those unable to attend the show (probably all of you, […]

Following the success of Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea (Hudson River, 2008) and the Miss Rockaway Armada (Mississippi River, 2006-2007), Swoon has announced her most ambitious and creative project to date: The Swimming Cities of Serenissima. In May 2009, Swoon will set sail in three intricately hand-crafted vessels built from recycled materials and crewed by 35 fellow artists starting from the Karst region of Slovenia across the Adriatic Sea to their final destination in Venice. The crafts will be developed as the journey progresses and […]

Takashi Murakami Retrospective @ Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain

From LA to New York to Germany, Murakami’s historic retrospective has traveled across oceans and continents, and now, here is a first look at the exhibit on its final leg in Spain at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. This retrospective encompasses Takashi’s entire career, from the early days of his “Hiropon Factory” to the evolution into his now juggernaut like “Kaikai Kiki Studio”. The master and creator of the “Superflat” art movement, Murakami has influenced our art and fine culture in ways we could have never […]

Openings: Brad Downey @ Stolen Space

Last night, AM stopped by Stolen Space’s Dray Walk Gallery and saw a good turn out for the opening of Brad Downey’s “An Honest Thief” show which runs until the 8th of February. The show features a range of work using video installations, 3D sculptures, photographic prints, film projections, vandalized record covers, and even some cross stitch throw in for good measure! In this solo show, Brad continues to explore ways of manipulating and reclaiming the urban environment around us – often in humorous and […]
