Streets: David Flores – “Basquiat” (Los Angeles)

Apart from the Cyrcle. crew painting their latest mural, David Flores also took the opportunity to paint his own mural at the Culver City building complex which houses mural work by Herakut and Andrew Hem. The Branded Arts sponsored project had Flores painting his signature style design on a big scale. Last time we saw Flores working on a wall, he took one of Phil Stern’s iconic images which featured James Dean. This time around Flores went a different route and created a rendering of […]

Viewpoints / Openings: Richard Hambleton pop-up show @ The Dairy, London

Three weeks ago, AM attended the London preview for the pop-up exhibition Richard Hambleton New York. Upon entering the venue, it wasn’t immediately clear whether we’d arrived at an art show or a fashion show. The heaving crowd and large amount of perfume in the air may have disoriented us slightly; we were left hesitating between taking pictures of the art on the walls and the clothes people were wearing. What’s certain is that the event was glamourous, and it’s been a long time since […]

LA Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child

The film we heard first heard whispers of at Art Basel Miami last year is finally ready for its Los Angeles release tonight. Billed as the definitive documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat, “The Radiant Child” (trailer) was filmed by close friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988 after which she stored the footage away for almost 20 years. There will be some special guests for some of the initial screenings, details after the jump…

Preview: Christie’s – Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Auction June 30 @ London

As we break out the sunblock and sandals and transition from Spring to Summer, and loved ones around us are graduating, auction season rages on. Tomorrow night, Christie’s in London will host their Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Auction. The works contained in the event are diverse and of the very highest quality. There is something for everyone — provided you are a millionaire. It ranges from the relatively young and emerging, such as rising stars Matthew Day Jackson, Tal R, and Jules de Balincourt, […]

Art Basel Switzerland 2010 – Part 1

There are many art fairs each year around the world, but there is one that draws the biggest galleries, the most eye-popping works of art and the wealthiest collectors, and that of course is Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. This year, for the first time, AM was there for the big show, and we couldn’t have been more impressed. And it seemed that the top-end collectors were also impressed, as the show was packed and buzzing from preview to closing, with many galleries reporting excellent […]

Video: Jean-Michel Basquiat Retrospective at Fondation Beyeler / Interview with Sam Keller

As we touched on briefly in our Overtime (our weekly summary of art news that doesn’t make it as full articles) last week, a rare retrospective has been organized for the late Jean-Michel Basquiat at Fondation Beyeler in Switzerland for what would have been his 50th birthday. Vernissage TV has put together a nice video where footage of the exhibition can be seen overlayed with an interview with Sam Keller, Fondation Beyeler’s director and the co-curator of this exhibition. Comprising more than 100 paintings, works […]

Openings: “Now’s the Time” @ Black Rat Press

As we mentioned in our preview, Black Rat Projects opened their doors a while back to a pretty impressive collection of the street scene a couple weeks ago. Just like the “Thousands” show last year, this exhibition gave fans a chance to see all their favorite street artists (including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Shepard Fairey (featured), Swoon (interviewed), Banksy, Barry Mcgee, Faile (featured) and Os Gemeos) at the same time under one roof. Other than museum shows, this is probably the only way you can […]

Video: Jean-Michel Basquiat – “The Radiant Child” Trailer

While we were in Miami for Art Basel last year, we heard whispers of a new documentary about Jean-Michel Basquiat entitled “The Radiant Child”.  We never did make it to the special screening, but the film official premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year (also site of recent Banksy sightings) and now a trailer video has made itself available online. Directed and filmed by the infamous graffiti artist’s friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988, she was overcome with the sadness of […]

Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day Art Auctions

Christie’s and Phillips de Pury have proven to have strong works available at their forthcoming auctions (check out our previews here and here). AM now examines Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day Art Sales (February 10 – 11), which contain great pieces by some of our favorite artists, such as Feng Zhengjie, Yoshitomo Nara and Andy Warhol (above). We are happy to report that several of our favorite lots, included those by Frank Auerbach, Lucio Fontana and Andy Warhol, performed well, either within or above estimate, in the evening sale […]

Preview: Phillips de Pury Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales

AM continues its coverage of the London February Auctions (see our Christie’s preview) with a look at Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 12 – 13 2010). Overall, there are fewer outstanding pieces available here than at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, however there are still many fantastic, iconic pieces up for grabs, including several Basquiats, a strong Banksy, an early Kaws set, and a fabulous Ai Weiwei triptych (above). Take a look after the jump…
