Previews: Jaune & Slinkachu – “Trash Talk” @ Thinkspace

Tomorrow night (June 1st) in Los Angeles, Thinkspace will be opening a special exhibition from two street artists known to work on the miniature scale. Entitled Trash Talk, the joint exhibition will feature work from both Beligum’s Jaune and UK-based Slinkachu. Known for his clever sculptural interventions with his subjects interacting with everyday objects from a different “Honey I Shrunk The Kids” perspective, Slinkachu has made the transition to indoor work easily by presenting his work as tiny dioramas. His work often has dark undertones so this contrasts […]

Recap: Aron Wiesenfeld – “Natural Selection” @ Arcadia Gallery

This last weekend, the hauntingly beautiful Aron Wiesenfeld show at Arcadia Contemporary closed its two week run. Natural Selection featured a new body of work from the San Diego-based artist, rendered expertly as usual and steeped with an air of mystery. His characters are typically portrayed by themselves in a desolate, dark setting or perhaps in some expansive natural environment where the viewer is drawn into some suspenseful narrative that they aren’t quite sure of. There is a feeling of not-quite-rightness and an atmospheric tension to each piece […]

Streets: Nychos x Low Bros (Los Angeles)

Earlier this month in Los Angeles, Austrian artist Nychos and German duo Low Bros teamed up for a mural in the backyard of new gallery Studio MOMÉ. The wall is not the first collaboration between The Weird Crew members, and while it features Nychos’ signature dissected imagery, it interestingly seems to be missing the retro futuristic geometric forms from the Low Bros who opted to instead add some of their repeating motifs – tennis ball, soda cans, and rose – to the composition. Check out some more […]

On April 13th, Over The Influence’s Los Angeles space will be hosting new sculptures and wall reliefs from the locally-based Mark Whalen (featured) with a show entitled Ramble Ramble. The Australian-born artist has been focusing on his three dimensional work of late, taking the heads of the gender-fluid figures from his paintings and stacking them in totemic multi-colored compositions. Created from cast aluminum, the intriguing pieces play with reality and feature different textures while appearing to balance with various balloon and air-filled objects. Discuss Mark Whalen here.

Upcoming: Oli Epp – “Contactless” @ Richard Heller Gallery

March 16th will mark the US solo debut of Oli Epp with a showing with Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Contactless. The new body of work is so named because of the London-based artist’s act of painting (use of airborne paint and limited touch), but also speaks to the modern world’s detachment from social contact as we become more dependent on technology to serve our needs. Epp’s imagery looks to the darker side of everyday life, with recognizable brands of consumerism ever present, and a […]

Upcoming: Josie Morway – “The Remediators” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Entitled The Remediators, the Boston-based artist’s new surreal wildlife paintings were inspired the idea of bioremediation – in which plants, animals or microorganisms break down contamination in soil or water. Morway further states – “I have a deep love for wildlife and an acute terror about the increasing imbalances in our ecosystems and the cavalier destruction caused by human industry. […]
