Previews: Daniel Arsham – “Kick the Tires and Light the Fires” @ OHWOW Gallery

On April 5th, the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting new works from Daniel Arsham entitled Kick the Tires and Light the Fires. The American artist is known for his sculptural “relics” that take modern items and recreates it in such a way that makes it appear as it would if found in the future as part of an archeological dig as well as works based off himself that resemble the victims of Pompeii. It looks like Takashi Murakami has been by to check out the setup of Yoshitomo Nara’s new solo show at Blum & Poe, and so should you tomorrow night (March 1st) when it opens (6-8pm). This latest exhibition will be the seventh one with the Los Angeles showspace and will feature lush new paintings, large-scale bronze sculptures, and a survey of approximately two hundred drawings made over the last thirty years. Openings: Risk & Nathan Ota – “Innocence Lost” @ Corey Helford Gallery

A couple weekends ago, old friends RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota opened up a show together at the Corey Helford Gallery. Displaying their collaborative efforts (like the paintings seen in 2011 in LA & SF), the two artists put together a cohesive new body of work that features RISK’s deconstructive color washes & lettering along with Ota’s surreal characters. After seeing the sweet wave breakdancer that Andrew Hem (interviewed) painted for a show (covered) during POW! WOW! Hawaii, we are really looking forward to his exhibition opening next month at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Entitled Dream But Don’t Sleep, the exhibition will feature the Los Angeles based artist’s dream-like paintings, always inspired by his Asian heritage as well as his travels and personal experiences. Expanding on and showing a series last seen during a show in Tokyo last year, the luminous works of Fuco Ueda will be making a rare appearance in the Los Angeles area. On March 29th, the Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting Kioku No Hana or Flower Of Memory from the Japanese painter featuring her young girls positioned in a bizarre world filled with bold electric colors, flora, and fauna – dominated by flowers in this instance. Openings: Joao Ruas – “VERSO” @ Thinkspace

Showing through this weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City is VERSO, a new solo show from Joao Ruas. The Brazilian artist presented a diverse set of works including his largest work to date (seen above), a wall mural & installation, etchings, polaroids, backlit pieces, and more utilizing mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pen, pencil, and gouache. Currently showing at the Resnick Pavilion of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through July 27rd is an exhibition featuring Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures. Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic is billed as his first museum show in Los Angeles and includes of course his signature “mobiles” and later “stabiles” that have made his work famous around the world. On Saturday, Feburary 15th, the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City will host a two-person show from RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota. As seen from their collaborative exhibitions in 2001 (LA & SF), the two reunited artists who started in the graffiti scene together over 25 years ago, have imagery that seems to fit so nicely together despite their divergent paths since high school. Expect more of Ota’s surrealistic and figurative characters superimposed over the letter-based backgrounds of RISK. Discuss Risk here. Discuss Nathan Ota here.

Setup: Jacob Hashimoto – “Gas Giant” @ MOCA Pacific Design Center

Jacob Hashimoto’s Gas Giant will be on view at MOCA Pacific Design Center from March 1 to June 8, but we were able to visit (courtesy of Martha Otero) the artist and his crew as they were on day 6 of putting up the massive 2-floor installation. The entire piece will take about one month to set up and will be Hashimoto’s first solo museum exhibition in California. From Jan 23 to Jan 26, Bumblebee’s first solo exhibition was on view at a pop-up location in Los Angeles. Consisting of new works and installations such as his Venice Beach lemonade stand, the show included familiar images from his street art murals, as well as his environmentally-conscious statements, such as his phone booths.
