Upcoming: Amy Sol @ CHG Circa

Besides her recent print releases, Amy Sol (interviewed) has also been busy working on her new solo. Coming up on September 14th at CHG Circa, the showing will see the Las Vegas-based painter reveal the next chapter in the story of her heroine and animal friends. It’s been a little over a year since she showed at the Culver City sister gallery (covered), so fans will be ready to see where Sol’s magical imagery is headed for next. Discuss Amy Sol here.

Openings: Push – “Adaptation” @ Known Gallery

For those who missed the three day only showing from PUSH at the Known Gallery, our friends at LA Taco have some photos of the event. Presented by Simple Mobile, Adaptation featured a setup from the LA-based graffiti artist that cleverly brought his signature patterns indoors, which at the same time transformed his usual 2D work into a three-dimensional interactive walkthrough installation. More photos below… Photo credit: LA Taco. Discuss PUSH here.

Upcoming: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Robot and donut enthusiast Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be opening a solo show at Corey Helford Gallery on August 10th, his fifth with the Culver City showspace. Unlike his last show (covered) which featured his old school mechanical characters in the natural setting, the new paintings depict them in the city along with their dependable fried dessert friends. Rife with irony, First World Problems will see his robots dealing with the “struggles” of urban coexistence. Discuss Eric Joyner here.

Showing: Michael Shields – “The Anatomy of LA” @ Martha Otero Gallery

Currently on view at Martha Otero Gallery and presented by Converse and Union Los Angeles is a photo exhibition and first edition book release, exploring the social and physical themes of Los Angeles and its neighborhoods by photographer Michael Shields. Taken from inside a LAPD helicopter, Shields’ photographs focus on the physical environment of the greater Los Angeles area and on the resulting social patterns within the city, rather than the beach and glamor, fun-in-the-sun summer shots typically taken of LA. Through these wide shots […]

Rumor Mill: Jeffrey Deitch’s Reign At MOCA Over?

Late last night, LA Weekly reported that Jeffrey Deitch will be leaving the LA MOCA at the end of the month. Despite increasing attendance during his reign at the Los Angeles institution and bringing in a fresh vision for the museum, there continue to be financial woes. Signs of discontent came to a head also with the controversial resignation of chief curator Paul Schimmel as well as multiple artists leaving the board under Deitch’s watch. It will be interesting to see what is next for Deitch as well as […]

Interview: DALeast

DALeast is a Chinese born artist that lives and works in Capetown, South Africa. After successful 2012 in which the artist painted his distinctive murals all over the world, had a sold out show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC, and instantly sold out two print releases, we thought it was time to catch up with him here on AM. So, we virtually visited him in his studio shortly after his successful show and murals project in London, and just before he headed for another productive […]

Openings: ‘Word Play’ @ Design Matters

A little while back we brought you a preview of some of the work for Word Play, hosted at Design Matters Gallery in Los Angeles. The premise of the exhibition excited us as the curated theme was based around text within art. The group exhibition was curated by Stephanie Chefas, of Platinum Cheese blog fame and features a variety of artists from very different backgrounds but all commonly using text in their work though a range of styles and mediums. Ben Venom (above), Shawn Huckins, Greg Lamarche, Gregory Siff, Meg Hitchcock, Meryl Pataky, and RERO all contributed […]

Previews: Naoto Hattori – “REM” @ Copro Gallery

It’s been a little over a year since Naoto Hattori last showed in Los Angeles (covered), so it is about time for another go. REM will open on July 27th at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, with the title seemingly referring to that stage of sleep where dreams occur. This is certainly as good a title as any to describe the Japanese painter’s imagery, with surreal and psychedelic creatures, all rendered in super detail. If you have seen his work in person, you will have marveled at […]
