Openings: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “The Escape Artist” @ KP Projects

Last weekend, Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) opened his latest solo with KP Projects in West Hollywood entitled The Escape Artist. This was also the name of the large showstopper, the locally-based artist’s painting that took center stage while exploring the above and below water creatures of his world. Seen in this new body of work, which is kind of a prequel to some of his shows in the past, are some unusual eggs, the precursors to some of the fantastical bird seen in his imagery. Also making an appearance were […]

Upcoming: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “The Escape Artist” @ KP Projects

On May 19th, KP Projects in Los Angeles will be hosting their annual solo show with Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured), his seventh with the gallery. Entitled The Escape Artist, the new body of work references the locally-based artist’s immersion into the surreal world he has created with his paintbrush, a way to get away to a place where anything is possible. He further explains – “I have been taking refuge in my memories lately. Memories of the first time I saw a whale in the wild, seeing a […]

Openings: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

Last weekend, an expansive collection of paintings, sculptures, and site-specific installations was revealed at BEYOND THE STREETS in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St). Curated by Roger Gastman, the show featured a roster of over 100+ artists working with 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space spurring them to produce some large and impressive works for the event. In addition to the shots we have already showed you in a preview here, we now have a many more pics to share with you. Make sure you stop […]

Previews: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

On May 6th, BEYOND THE STREETS will open its doors in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St), an immersive survey of graffiti and street art, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Art in the Streets (covered) in 2011. This is not surprisingly seeing as Roger Gastman was an associate curator of that show back then at the MOCA, and will be the main curator of this new exhibition. Working with a roster of over 100+ artists, 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space has been converted […]

Previews: Lonac – “Strange Tales” @ Thinkspace

For his first solo show with Thinkspace Gallery opening up on this Friday night (May 4th), Lonac has prepared a new body of work entitled Strange Tales. Choosing a title that fits nicely with his surreal imagery, the Croatian artist’s new paintings are typical of his oeuvre, snapshots in time that appear to be taken from some mysterious adventure. Informed by his time on the streets, the Zagreb-based artist also draws influence from his love of comics, music, film, and an immersion in skateboard culture. […]

Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]

Previews: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Wonderful World of Dr. Deekay” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Following up on her show in 2016 (covered here & here), Camille Rose Garcia will be opening her solo soon in downtown Los Angeles at Corey Helford Gallery on May 12th entitled The Wonderful World of Dr. Deekay. As referenced by the title of the exhibition, the work centers around imagery from her new illustrated dystopian novel and stop motion animation documenting the horror of her real life dental experience of enduring “11 root canals, a full mouth reconstruction, gum surgery, and finally a bad reaction to an anti-anxiety pill […]

Upcoming: Daniel Arsham – “Character Study” @ Morán Morán Gallery

Tonight in Los Angeles, Morán Morán Gallery will be opening a solo show from Daniel Arsham entitled Character Study. The title likely references the first part of the New York-based artist’s new body of work, the large scale recreations of his childhood collection of cartoon character patches that adorned his backpack. Created with plaster and in white, as is the formerly color-blind artist’s practice, the pieces which amazingly look to have the texture of cloth, are dusted with pigment chiaroscuro style. Arsham explains – “When I began delving into […]

Upcoming: Brendan Monroe – “Formations” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

After shows with Heath Ceramics in 2014 (in LA) and 2015 (in SF), Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be returning for another exhibition at the Los Angeles location starting Saturday night (April 7th). Entitled Formations, some of the new body of work will be a little different than his sculptural pieces in the past as he has decided to explore Heath tile’s flat clay surface as a new medium. Molding the surface, making it more dimensional, Monroe has created a series of pieces that feature his organic patterns and […]
