Last week, Chris Burden’s epic kinetic sculpture, Metropolis II, was revealed to the public at the LACMA. The complex and frenetic creation from the LA-based artist took four years to complete and is a model of a miniature city with an emphasis on an intricate transportation system. Openings: Allison Sommers – “Potter’s Field” @ Thinkspace

Recently, Thinkspace hosted the work of Allison S0mmers (interviewed) in an exhibition titled Potter’s Field alongside the showing from Esao Andrews (covered). The new body of work showed off Sommers’ unique perspective on themes such as war, violence, and the way these factors affect the human being. Her illustrations invite the viewer to study it up close and although the artworks may not seem large in size, the small details she infuses into her artwork add another level of dimensionality which is hard not to notice. Streets: Bumblebee – “Mutual Feeling” (Los Angeles)

As if they do not have enough problems in their lives already, the homeless in Southern California have had quite the struggle recently, ranging from being beaten by a famous frozen yogurt purveyor to being targeted, stalked, and killed by a military vet. News stories like these bring to the forefront that being homeless is still a very real problem for many and it does not only affect men and women that are down on their luck. Young boys and girls are also affected by […]

Over the weekend, the Known Gallery exhibited the work of artist Sage Vaughn (featured) in an exhibit titled Last Year. The first solo showing for the UK-based artist at the gallery featured a collection of large woven editions based on his paintings and on his collages from his Envelope Series. While working with a different type of material, Vaughn still managed to infuse his ironic take on popular culture. Whether it was images referencing the late 70s to early 80s or his use of animals […]

Openings: Damien Hirst – “The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011” @ Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills

Being located the furthest west of any of the galleries in Larry Gagosian’s dominant empire, Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills was the very last spot (no pun intended) to host its public opening reception for Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011.  The immaculate outpost in the world famous 90210 area code is currently showing twenty-three spotted paintings of various size spots and canvases.  Unlike every other venue, it has the proud distinction of exhibiting the very largest spot piece, Pivalic Acid [pictured above],  which measures an […]

The very special night was hosted by actor Tim Roth and […]
