Previews: “Dark Pop” @ Last Rites

This Saturday, March 3, in New York, the Last Rites Gallery will be hosting another iteration of their Dark Pop exhibition. The fourth version of the show, which has artists focusing on creating one piece that encompasses what they consider “dark art,” will be curated by Gary Pressman and will feature artists like Alexandra Pacula, Ana Bagayan, Brian Despain, Charles Wish, Dave MacDowell, Mark Garro, Matt Dangler, Matthew Grabelsky, TIN, Travis Lampe, Travis Louie, and more. Thinkspace gallery made a move into Culver City last month, and as one gallery leaves to take a step up, another moves in to fill it’s boots. Matt Dangler (interviewed) recently sent us a couple preview images from his upcoming solo show “Searching for Satori” opening Friday, May 29th at Gallery 1988’s San Francisco location. Â According to Matt, “In Zen Buddhism ‘Satori’ is a spiritual awakening that often comes suddenly. Headed out to Palm Springs last night to attend the opening of Matt Dangler’s “Out From the Whirlwind” (previewed) and Yumiko Kayukawa’s “The Last 34” (previewed).Â Matt’s paintings looked to be getting more detailed with this body of work.Â He also spent time explaining some of the symbolism and geometry behind each piece leaving us impressed with the amount of planning and thought he gave to each painting.Â Yumiko’s show highlighted many of the endangered species around the world including polar bears, elephants and leopards.Â […]

Matt Dangler just sent us the the promo image he scanned in for his “Out From the Whirlwind” show at M Modern. The opening reception is scheduled for December 12th. While this won’t be for quite some time, we expect a great show from this young artist. The piece shown above is an 8″ x 10″ titled “Mysterium Tremendum”.
