Showing: Justin Bower – “Panic Room” @ Unix Gallery

Currently showing in New York is Justin Bower’s new solo show at the Unix Gallery entitled Panic Room. The Los Angeles-based painter is presenting a new collection of large scale work featuring his multi-layered and frenetic portraiture. The surreal faces portrayed look like they have been taken from glitchy TV monitors with their faces vacillating between various emotions, embellished and broken up with artificial geometric artifacts. Openings: Adam Wallacavage – “Magic Mountain” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, AM stopped by the currently running show from Adam Wallacavage (interviewed) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Magic Mountain features the Philadelphia-based artist’s surreal mixed media sculptures and functional art objects as well as some pieces inspired and cast from vintage toys in his personal collection. Streets: Invader (New York)

With the special screening of ART4SPACE (covered) for Invader’s fans in New York City last month, you would expect the secretive street artist to also make an appearance. As evidenced by the fresh public works, including the appearance of new video game characters and other pop icons, Invader made the most of his time while in the Big Apple. With the private opening set tonight and the public unveiling on November 11th, Clare Rojas’ new exhibition is set to give her fans in New York a look at her recent abstract work. Hosted by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld, the show will mark her return to the Big Apple with 24 new paintings and drawings from the SF-based artist that deal with “ideas of balance and harmony through color and space.” Along with these pieces, she has also written three poems with will be on display. KAWS certainly has had a busy schedule in the last couple of weeks with multiple openings that drew huge crowds. The Brooklyn-based artist in the last month or so has opened UPS AND DOWN at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City and a show at the PAFA in Philadelphia. AM recently attended the opening of Tara McPherson’s newest show at Jonathan LeVine, her third solo with the Chelsea gallery. Inspired by the unexplored realms of deep space and deep sea, Wandering Luminations features the Brooklyn-based artist’s surreal portraiture of females and creatures all rendered in her signature palette of pinks and teals. Spanish-born, German-raised and New York City based identical twin brothers How & Nosm (Raoul and Davide Perre), have been spending most of the last three months doing a residency at Watanabe Press in Brooklyn, working on big project with Pace Prints. During this period, they created a new series of hand painted mono silkscreens for a show that’s scheduled for spring 2014. AM recently stopped by the Wolfbat Studios of Dennis McNett. The Brooklyn-based artist is getting ready for his solo exhibition entitled Temple of Wolfbat at Known Gallery in Los Angeles that is set to open on November 16th. Vancouver-based artist Jeff Depner opened his debut New York solo exhibition last week at Nancy Margolis Gallery. Variations: Black Napkins showcases Depner’s intense application process where he places multiple layers of paint amidst an equal amount of reductive processes to build up his compositions. His hard edged forms have an organic feel amongst the highly stylized architectural notions he presents. Geometric configurations wrestle with natural elements in his paintings, where colour theory underpins his architectonic aesthetic.
