It looks like Chinese artist Liu Bolin was back in New York again recently since the last time he was in the Big Apple when we hung out with him and JR as they worked on an interesting collaborative project together. While in town for his current exhibition at Eli Klein Fine Art, site of his show in 2012 (covered), the photographer and painter decided to stop by 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center, in an area of Queens which has heavy graffiti presence. Openings: “Sunsets & Pussy” @ Marianne Boesky

Last week, Marianne Boesky Gallery put together a hot (NSFW) group show just in time for the warm weather to hit New York City. Entitled Sunsets & Pussy, this show brings together three generations of artists – Ed Ruscha, Lucien Smith, Betty Tompkins and Piotr Uklański. Each artist contributed works that explored two classic themes of summer wonder. Some tongue in cheek and some a little more subtle, this showcase features some interesting and creative take on the creative theme. Check out a NSFW look below.

Joining an illustrious list of artists (see some of the others here) commissioned by The High Line to design a billboard, Raymond Pettibon chose to use his 2010 drawing No Title (Safe he called…). The scene at home plate features the American artist’s characteristic imagery and text which references characters known well to those in New York like The Notorious B.I.G, Jackie Robinson, and Robert Moses. Openings: Israel Lund @ Eleven Rivington

Last week, Eleven Rivington (11 Rivington Street location) unveiled a new body of work from Brooklyn-based artist Israel Lund. This intriguing exhibition showcases Lund’s interesting viewpoint and technique. His creative process often starts as an image of nothing, which he then repeatedly silkscreens and forces ink onto the null area. He then manipulates the image by enlarging, degrading or distorting it systematically thus eventually creating something out of nothing. As a followup to his showing last year, Twenty-Four in San Francisco, Brett Amory (featured) brings this conceptual vision to the East Coast. Amory filmed 40 locations throughout the five boroughs of New York, each in a one-hour increment at all hours of the day and night. Upcoming: Pose & Revok – “Uphill Both Ways” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

This Saturday night (June 29th), the Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be presenting a two-person exhibition (cureated by Roger Gastman) from Pose and Revok. Openings: “Zombie” @ Last Rites Gallery

Last weekend, the Last Rites Gallery hosted the opening for a night celebrating the undead. This new Zombie group show in New York was curated by Travis Louie and featured a hand-picked roster of artists giving their artistic interpretation (like Joshua Hoffine seen above) of the living dead with paintings and sculptural pieces.
