Upcoming / Armory Week ’13: Thinkspace @ SCOPE

With Armory Week upon us with the fairs opening later this week, New York will be beset by collectors, artists, and gallerists soon. Thinkspace Gallery will be showing at SCOPE with works from Allison Sommers, Ana Bagayan, Brian M. Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). Last month, Mark Dean Veca (featured) opened a new solo show at the Cristin Tierney Gallery entitled Made For You And Me. The mostly new series of paintings explore the LA-based artist’s interpretation of the collapse of the “American Dream” and the corruption of ideals in this country, seen through the lens of his re-imagining of pop culture. Tracey Emin Lights Up Times Square

Every night this month, at 11:57 pm, Time Square in New York will be lit up with work from Tracey Emin. The English artist’s iconic “neon” messages will spell themselves out over three minutes, digitally animated (which can be purchased as s[edition]) on 40 screens of different sizes placed all around the famous intersection in Midtown Manhattan.
