Previews: ‘Ambiguity’ @ Zimmerling & Jungfleisch

This weekend, Galerie Zimmerling & Jungfleisch brings a well balanced combination of graffiti roots and contemporary abstract art to Saarbrücken in Germany in the guise of group exhibition Ambiguity. Concentrating on four key proponents of the Graffuturism movement; Poesia, Augustine Kofie, Remi Rough and LX One – whose dimensional work is pictured above – the exhibition looks full of promise from some of the hardest working artists in their field. Repping the USA and Europe in equal measure, these four innovators use a dialect that has helped […]

886 Geary Gallery hosts a stellar line up of contemporary artists that have transitioned from graffiti artists into highly regarded fine artists, without compromising their heritage, tonight in the form of the Graffuturism 5 Year Anniversary Group Exhibition. The first in a planned series of exhibitions across the globe celebrating the success of an art blog that been the catalyst in fostering a genuine movement, this exhibition in San Francisco is curated by Graffuturism founder Poesia; who brings together a global selection of artists that have established […]

Preview: Poesia & Geso ‘Un-Formal’ @ 886 Geary Gallery

886 Geary Gallery continues the charge with it’s second exhibition Un-Formal, a two [erson exhibition with Geso and Poesia opening this Saturday, February 21st. Geso and Poesia have both been in the game for years, and those in the Bay Area will be familiar with their abstract influenced stylings out in the wild. Whilst Poesia is regarded for his angular compositions, now commonly defined under his creation of the Graffuturism banner, Geso is known for his stylised freights and heavily tagged walls where his moniker is repeated over […]

Previews: Filippo Minelli ‘Nothing To Say’ @ 886 Geary Gallery

Long time AM friend Poesia launches 886 Geary Gallery this week with an exhibition by Filippo Minelli entitled Nothing To Say. As well as being the new space’s inaugural exhibition, this will be Italian interventionist’s first solo presentation in the United States. Minelli’s photographs have been taken locally in California and the San Francisco Bay Area in preparation for this exhibition. Taking his concept of Silence/Shapes, Minelli uses coloured smoke bombs and recontextualizes protest symbolism within silent environments. The juxtaposition of the brightly coloured smoke clouds within […]

Openings: Mr Jago – ‘New Co-ordinates’ & Poesia – ‘Reflexive’ @ White Walls & Shooting Gallery

If you have more than a passing interest in abstract graffiti, then White Walls and Shooting Gallery’s August double-header would have peaked your interest. Transcend members Mr Jago (seen above) from Bristol in the UK and local boy Poesia (seen below) opened a pair of solo exhibitions respectively entitled New Co-ordinates and Reflexive. Jago’s organic compositions have an ethereal flow, and whilst Poesia’s angular geometric biased work visually couldn’t be more different, both contain a similar dynamism within their work, forged from their pursuit of abstraction of the work […]

Previews: ‘Rewire’ @ Gamma Transport Division (Edinburgh)

Art and music have long enjoyed a reciprocal relationship. Take the album cover for example. For years, musicians have found or commissioned visual artists to portray an aesthetic that resonates with the contents of the sleeve resulting in a complete aural and visual package. Gamma Proforma’s forthcoming exhibition and project Rewire flip reverses this process with a collection of artworks produced by visual artists forming the inspiration for a series of sonic interpretations of the artworks by musicians. A perfect fit for Gamma Proforma who […]

Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format.  Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Roster: 2501, Adam Friedman, Adam Weir, Akiko Masker, Alex Lukas, Alicia Dubnyckyj, […]

Previews: “A Major Minority” @1:AM Gallery

Curated by Graffuturism founder and artist Poesia (interviewed), A Major Minority gathers A4 sized works from over 100 artists in 18 countries from what he likes to call “Othercontemporay Urban Art.” He states “because Urban Art has been misunderstood and ignored by institutions and their current version of art history, it was necessary to attempt to initiate and standardize a unique term that would augment and define this outsider art form.” Opening on March 14th at 1:AM Gallery  in San Franscico, the show aims to illustrate the large scope of this art […]

Interviews: Poesia / Graffuturism – “L’Avenir” Group Exhibition

If you follow the Graffuturism blog you’re probably aware of its writer and curator – Poesia. He is one of the pioneers of abstract graffiti and a member of the Transcend collective who helped popularise this particular form of graffiti, pushing new styles into the public eye as the movement continues to gather momentum and break boundaries. This weekend on 14th December, White Walls Gallery in SF plays host to L’Avenir, a group exhibition that acts as an international survey of the Graffuturism movement and features Augustine […]
