Preview: Quam Odunsi – “Distinction Without a Difference” @ Design Matters Gallery

Opening on the evening of Nov 20 in Los Angeles is Quam Odunsi’s third solo show with Design Matters Gallery. For this exhibition, the artist explores the logical fallacy of distinction without a difference. For those unfamiliar with the term, it occurs when “an author or speaker attempts to describe a distinction between two things, even though there is, in fact, no actual difference. It is particularly used when a word or phrase has connotations associated with it that one party to an argument prefers […]

Previews: John Felix Arnold III – ‘No Destination’ @ FFDG

This Friday, October 3rd, John Felix Arnold III opens his latest solo exhibition at FFDG. No Destination is Arnold’s final part of his trilogy of exhibitions in 2014 and also marks his leaving of the Bay Area after an eight year stay before he moves to New York. Expect to see his individual artworks carry through into a gallery installation, sculptural […]

Previews: ‘Rewire’ @ Gamma Transport Division (Edinburgh)

Art and music have long enjoyed a reciprocal relationship. Take the album cover for example. For years, musicians have found or commissioned visual artists to portray an aesthetic that resonates with the contents of the sleeve resulting in a complete aural and visual package. Gamma Proforma’s forthcoming exhibition and project Rewire flip reverses this process with a collection of artworks produced by visual artists forming the inspiration for a series of sonic interpretations of the artworks by musicians. A perfect fit for Gamma Proforma who […]

Opening on Friday, May 2nd at Loakal Art Gallery is Degeneration/Regeneration, featuring works by Scott Greenwalt and Smith|Allen and curated by Nastia Voynovskaya. Smith|Allen (above) comprises sculptor and installation artist Stephanie Smith and architect and designer Bryan Allen. The duo creates 3D-printed installations that respond to their […]

Interviews: Sage Vaughn – ‘Nobody’s Home’ @ Lazarides

LA based Sage Vaughn makes a welcome return to the UK for his new solo exhibition Nobody’s Home this week at Lazarides Gallery. His ability to present beauty and brutality, cleverly intertwined within the same image, has always resonated with us. A couple of weeks ago, Sage interviewed Bill McRight for AM in anticipation of his solo exhibition Willing to Lose at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. This time around Bill has repaid the favour and turned the questions on Sage. Read on as the pair […]

Previews: Mat Collishaw – “The Last Meal on Death Row” @ Stephen Webster

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Stephen Webster (in its No Regrets lounge) in Beverly Hills, CA will open a show of works by Mat Collishaw featuring his Last Meal on Death Row works. This series features meticulously-arranged staged photography still lifes based on death row inmates’ last meals before they are executed. The eerie subject of the images conflict with the style in which they are depicted: 17th century Vanitas paintings –  a manner traditionally used to explore the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, […]

Previews: Mantis – ‘Epoch’ @ Hoxton Gallery

Following his last solo exhibition Altered State, South African born & UK based artist Mantis opens his latest endeavour Epoch tonight (Thursday 10th October) at East London’s Hoxton Gallery. With works in a variety of mediums and new paintings using his familiar ochre tonal palette, Mantis also suggests that attendees bring along a pound coin or two so that they can participate in one of the installation elements – his last exhibit featured adapted fruit machines, so expect some kind of interactive technology meets art clash. The […]
