Streets: ROA (South Africa)

Following the opening of his latest solo show in San Francisco (covered), prolific traveler and street artist ROA has landed in South Africa for ART JOBURG. Presented by adidas Originals, the month long project brings in five muralists (also including Remed, Steve “ESPO” Powers, Falko, and Cameron Platter) into the heart of Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg’s central art district for large-scale public art. For his part, the Belgium-based ROA painted his signature animals, indigenous to the location (like he did in Australia), and threw them up on the side of […]

Openings: ROA – “Dominant Species” @ 941 Geary

Last Saturday, 941 Geary hosted the opening to ROA’s latest ambitious endeavor entitled, Dominant Species (previewed). This is the followup to his exhibition last year at the San Francisco gallery’s sister location, White Walls. This time around, ROA was given an even larger space and more time to transform the gallery into an urban wasteland where the animals depicted in his paintings roam. The works in the gallery include ones that can be physically manipulated and/or viewed at different angles to show different layers of […]

This Saturday (September 15th), Belgian-born artist ROA makes his return to San Francisco (see 2011) for a new solo show at 941 Geary. Of course, expect a site-specific interactive installation constructed from found objects and salvaged materials. Security has been tight as the show has been under a veil of secrecy, but here are some […]
