Previews: “Lush Life” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

On May 6th, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco will be hosting a group show curated by Kirsten Anderson (owner of the recently closed Roq La Rue). One of her ongoing series of shows, Lush Life, will be brought to life again with contributions from Lauren Levato Coyne, Peter Ferguson, Laurie Hogin (seen above), Jeff Jacobson, Redd Walitzki, John Brophy, Tyler Thrasher, Travis Louie, and Laurie Lee Brom. Openings: Casey Gray – “Double Knotted” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Double Knotted, Casey Gray’s first solo show with Hashimoto Contemporary opened in San Francisco. The new body of work from the locally-based artist continues his explorations of still life with his unique technique utilizing spray paint and hand-cut masking (check out the video below). Gray’s carefully curated selection of objects are arranged into vibrant compositions, a masterful example being the large 8 x 6 foot showstopper piece. If you look carefully at the collection of eclectic items, you can even see a little Barry McGee bottle. […]

On March 18th, Weinstein Gallery in San Francisco hosted a big comeback solo show by DALeast (interviewed). After more than a year of traveling and self discovery, the Chinese-born artist introduced a new body of work entitled Plasma. Taking the scientific definition of plasma as an inspiration, the new pieces continue artist’s quest for inner self and speak to the connection between living beings on Earth. Recap: Erin M. Riley – “Simple” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Just last weekend in San Francisco, Hashimoto Contemporary closed a solo show from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) entitled Simple. The new weavings continue the Brooklyn-based artist’s provocative work pushing the boundaries of the medium with non-traditional imagery. Nude selfies, car wrecks, evidence of domestic violence – no subject matter is too taboo for Riley as she takes her tapestries to the next level rendering imagery that most observers wouldn’t even think are possible with medium of choice. On April 1st, Hashimoto Contemporary will present a new body or work from Casey Gray in their San Francisco space. Entitled Double Knotted, this will the first solo at the gallery by the locally-based artist featuring his special form of still life utilizing spray paint and hand-cut masking techniques. Openings: Jeremiah Jenkins – “Everything Must Go” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Earlier this month, Hashimoto Contemporary opened a solo show from Jeremiah Jenkins entitled Everything Must Go. The new body of work includes sculptural works from the local artist that display his signature wit and novel technique of dismantling an item’s original form and recreating it in a way to make the viewer think. The most delightful pieces come from his Trophy series where the ubiquitous golden figures seen on top of the common prizes appear to have taken a lives of their own. Photo credit: Shaun Roberts.

On February 4th, Spoke Art’s San Francisco location will be hosting a group show celebrating the films of Japanese film-maker and animator Hayao Miyazaki. Openings: 1010 – “Eversion” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary welcomed in the Hamburg-based 1010 for a solo showing at their San Francisco space entitled Eversion. Mirroring his aesthetic on the streets, the German artist created a series of colorful portals, formed with graduated layers of paint on acrylic glass and mounted on aluminum dibond. When seen in public, 1010’s work has a powerful illusory effect, making the viewer see a large crevice or hole on the side of a building.
