Videos: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Submerged”

On September 27th, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) will be unveiling new sculptural installations in Hong Kong’s Time Square. Presented by LeBasse Projects, the large heads (see below) that look like the ones often seen in the LA-based artist’s work will be interacting with passer-bys in one of the busiest areas in Causeway Bay. Previews: ‘Unnatural Histories II’ @ Antler Gallery

Here’s a show that a few people are looking forward to. Unnatural Histories II is the follow up to last year’s group exhibition at Portland’s Antler Gallery. Opening on 26th September, the exhibition calls for each participating artist to create a natural history inspired portrait of a mythical creature. The subject can either be taken from existing mythologies/folklore or completely invented by the artist. Earlier this month Max Kauffman opened his solo exhibition Your Vulnerability Makes You Beautiful at Loakal Gallery in Oakland. Folk-tinged, and stylistically defined by his watercolour colour palette of brown and blue hues, Kauffman’s work within the exhibition presents subject matter of broken down houses and landscape elements reclaimed by nature. Opening next month at Hellion Gallery is Inhabitants – a two person show featuring the work of Portland based artists JShea & Stephanie Buer. We’ve been following Stephanie Buer’s work since we first came across it a couple of years ago. Korean artist Yu Jinyoung (interviewed) recently opened her first solo show in Italy at Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan. Previews: Casey Gray – ‘Tropic’ @ White Walls

Bay Area artist Casey Gray is set to open his third solo exhibition with SF gallery White Walls on October 12th. The show is entitled Tropic, and looks to be packed with imagery that conjures up the scent of pina coladas and coconut oil. We’ve watched Casey’s work develop over the last few years and these boldly composed still life stencils look to be executed with a new level of mastery of his chosen technique. Definitely one to catch if you are in the Bay Area.

The anticipation has been building in the art community on Faile’s upcoming exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary. The New York based duo of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller have been working non-stop since their incredible project with the New York City Ballet for this trip to Texas. Openings: Ludo – “Destructionis Hostis Vespa” @ White Walls

Last weekend, White Walls in San Francisco hosted the opening for Ludo’s (interviewed) new solo show. Entitled Destructionis Hostis Vespa, the exhibition is named for a creature from the Parisian street artist’s Nature’s Revenge series or works – a cross between a combat airplane and a wasp. Displayed in sculptural form as well as with paintings from multiple angles, blue prints if you will, the entire show was able to present a cohesive feel to it and also gave striking examples of Ludo’s work. The corner of Via Lambro and Via Melzo in Milan was packed with urban art lovers and skateboarders that wanted to meet and greet legendary Ed Templeton on the night of 19th of September.
