Preview: “Shades” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Tonight in Culver City, the Corey Helford Gallery will be opening a new group show featuring Aaron Woes Martin, Andrew Brandou, Beau Stanton, Ben Frost, Carlos Ramos, Chloe Early (above), Cyrcle, David Stoupakis, Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, Ernesto Yerena, Esao Andrews, Germs, Greg Gossel, Joey Remmers, Junghwa Hong, Lola, Martin Wittfooth, Melissa Haslam, Michael Peck, Nate Frizzell, Nouar, Revok, Richard J Oliver, Risk, Shag, Soey Milk, Tom Bagshaw, and Yumiko Kayukawa. Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery played host to a new show from Kevin Earl Taylor entitled Monument Adrift. The exhibition feature his landscapes that include various creatures which are almost treated architecturally in some instances, placed on pedestals, incorporated into decaying structures, or portrayed as building blocks. Muralist Phlegm recently travelled to Ibiza for this year’s Bloop Festival which has just gotten started. Like his effort last year for the event held on the popular island in the Mediterranean Sea, the Sheffield-based street artist was given lots of space to work with. Portland based artist Zach Johnsen is busy preparing for his upcoming exhibition entitled The House of Uncommons. The body of work created for the show explores an alternate parliamentary governing system comprised of spirit figures existing outside the periphery of mankind. Each painting depicts a figure within this fantasy system of rules with its own unique title, identity and powers of legislation. Berkeley based artist Mario Wagner builds his worlds to incorporate a level of cinematic intrigue through the retro futurist sci-fi imagery that speaks to the era from which he draws reference – a time when futuristic fascination was widespread, space travel was imminent, and the possibilities of technology were limitless. The German born artist uses analog methods of collage incorporating vintage print media alongside painted elements. Those lucky enough to attend SDCC last week and and weekend may have feasted their eyes on a new sculptural piece from Robert Williams. The Rapacious Wheel (made in collaboration with Gentle Giant Studios) dominated the area where the Juxtapoz founder held his daily signings and screened his documentary.
