Continuing to show with Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be presenting a new body of work starting this Saturday (July 14th). As is his usual practice, the new exhibition, Graduation, will draw from nostalgic experiences growing up in Hawaii, producing haunting and ethereal imagery crafted with his unique mixed media process. Previews: “Aquamarine” @ Creatura House Gallery

Tonight (July 12th) in Seattle, Creatura House Gallery will be opening a new group show entitled Aquamarine. For the exhibition, 11 artists were asked to create work based on the theme, which could refer to the stone, the color, or aquatic imagery. Participants include Madeline Von Foerster, John Brophy, Brian Despain, Jonathan Viner (seen above), Laurie Lee Brom, Logan Hicks, Gail Potocki, Travis Louie, Flannery Grace Good, Claudia Griesbach-Martucci, and Scott Musgrove.

Tomorrow (July 7th), Cleon Peterson will be opening a brutal new show at the Los Angeles location of Over The Influence. Showing: Haroshi – “NANZUKA at Petzel” @ Petzel Gallery

Recently in New York, Haroshi (featured) unveiled a new series of works at Petzel Gallery (35 E 67th Street location) for Tokyo’s Nanzuka Gallery as part of the second New York edition of Condo, a gallery share program. Known for his sculptural use of skate decks as a medium, the Japanese artist had 29 new pieces on view alongside works from Makoto Taniguchi & Mori Masato. Arranged in a circle, the sold out cleverly conceived half kaiju half wood pieces made for a striking installation. Discuss Haroshi here.

A couple weeks ago, Angell Gallery in Toronto opened a new solo from Gavin Lynch entitled Letting go is hard. Just closing over the weekend in London, BRD SHT from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) filled Lazinc with clever sculptural works that mirror his public interventions. Although it’s still a couple months in the future, Daniel Arsham has been teasing his upcoming show opening on September 8th at Perrotin’s New York location with photos of a DeLorean reimagined with his “Future Archeology” motif in mind. Entitled 3018, the name of the upcoming exhibition certainly references the NYC-based artist’s longstanding practice of creating objects common in our time in a manner that he envisions will be discovered by archeologists in the future. Upcoming: Hajime Sorayama – “Sorayama Explosion” @ NANZUKA

On July 7th, NANZUKA in Tokyo will be hosting the opening of a new solo show from Hajime Sorayama. Entitled Sorayama Explosion, the exhibition will feature paintings as well as a new human-scale sculpture from the Japanese artist known for his “sexy robot” motif. Also available will be a few held back Sorayama Classic Robot SURF sculptural editions from APPortfolio (seen further below) and a new ceramic sculpture edition from Case Studyo entitled A Touch of Mercury (seen directly below). A few days ago in New York, French artist JR (interviewed) opened a new show entitled Horizontal at Perrotin Gallery. Tomorrow (June 30th), Vitality and Verve III will open to the public (private gala tonight) at the Long Beach Museum of Art, presented in curatorial collaboration with Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Projects and the support of POW! WOW! Long Beach. The third iteration of the group exhibition highlighting artists from the “New Contemporary Art Movement” features an excellent roster including Sergio Garcia and Saber who collaborated on a cool installation featuring Garcia’s sculpture of Saber’s hand in mid spray with the graffiti artist providing his tag.
