Openings: “Gin & Juice” @ Ivory & Black

Last week, Ivory & Black in London hosted their first group exhibition featuring painters Andrew Schoultz, Cleon Peterson, James Jean, Richard Colman and Ryan Travis Christian. Entitled Gin & Juice, the artists chosen all have been influenced by various Californian subcultures which in turn has informed their work and imagery. Showgoers were also greeted by James Jean (featured) who made the trip over and took time to work in a wall installation. Discuss this show here.

When attending top-tiered fairs such as Art HK, one can expect to encounter many notable works by some of the top names in the industry. Once in a while, a piece will stop you to take a closer look. Before leaving for Art HK a couple months ago, we stopped by for the opening of Streets of the World presented by Opera Gallery. This grouping included an all-star cast of street & urban artists exhibiting in the heart of New York’s Soho district. Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Between Wind and Water” @ Thinkspace

Just this last Saturday, the Thinkspace Gallery presented a new show from Sarah Joncas (interviewed) entitled Between Wind and Water. The collection of new works included paintings as well as drawings featuring the Toronto-based artist’s female portraiture embellished with a surreal narrative. Openings: “Daydreaming with…” (Hong Kong Edition) @ ARTISTREE

Last month, AM stopped by the Hong Kong edition of the Daydreaming with… exhibition. Designed to marry music and visual art, this experience gathered some high profile names in the genres of music, art, film, photography, fashion and design. Openings: Patrick Martinez – “Lovely Day” @ Known Gallery

Last weekend, Patrick Martinez opened his solo show Lovely Day at the Known Gallery in the heart of LA. Continuing to display a creative versatility, the locally-based artist put a selection of pieces on the walls ranging from sculptural neon works, mixed media works, paintings, as well as a set of vending machines with custom made items. Upcoming: Martin Wittfooth @ Corey Helford

Coming up in September, the Corey Helford Gallery plans to lead off the fall season with an exhibition from Martin Wittfooth (interviewed). After witness a brilliant showing last October from the Brooklyn-based painter in New York where he unveiled increasingly powerful imagery in his work, we are looking forward to seeing what he has in store for LA. ADAA ’12: Yoshitomo Nara – “Works on Paper” @ Pace Gallery

Several months ago at the ADAA Art Show, we caught some new work from Yoshitomo Nara as he made his solo fair debut with Pace Gallery. The entire booth was filed with a variety of Nara’s signature works on paper. Lined up by time periods, attendees such as Damien Hirst and some of New York’s top collectors visiting the booth got a chance to see some of Nara’s older works and understand the progression to the current blue-chip stage of his career. Streets: World Roundup (June 11 – 17)

We start this weeks roundup of street activity with this new fun piece from Dabs Myla. As you can see, their choice of subject matter was quite interesting and can be summed up by their description – “Poop Shooting, Vampire Dicking, and Crack Smoking.” The piece was painted for Roger Gastman for his backyard (thus the Orioles reference). Art HK ’12: Rei Sato – “All Monsters Hold Secrets in Their Grasp” @ Kaikai Kiki

Another booth we spent time at during Art HK was the one stocked by Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki gallery. Their booth held a solo feature for Rei Sato and her latest body of work entitled All Monsters Hold Secrets in Their Grasp.
