Preview: “Juxtapoz Turns 18” @ Copro Gallery

This Saturday night, March 24th, the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica will play host to a group exhibition celebrating 18 years of Juxtapoz goodness. An excellent lineup of artists have submitted work to pay their respects to the counter-culture magazine that has revolutionized the art scene including Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Andrew Schoultz, Souther Salazar, Anthony Ausgang, Tiffany Bozic, Candice Tripp, SHAG and many more. Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening for Kris Kuksi’s latest body of work entitled Triumph. The solo exhibition held at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery was his most impressive yet. Focusing on going big, Kris brought the heavy artillery as several mammoth works became the centerpieces of the night. A few weekends back in Los Angeles, Luis De Jesus opened a group exhibition entitled Dualities, Omissions, Loops, and Ruptures, featuring local artists Chris Engman, Cody Trepte, Samantha Roth, and John Houck. The cleverly curated grouping brought together four artists as disparate in technique as they are unified in purpose, collectively weaving between photography, film, drawing, print, and sculpture in order to explore ideas of “constructed realities” and “emotional dualities” in their own individual ways. Teaser: Fumi Nakamura – “Our Hands Will Eventually Destroy Everything Beautiful” @ Thinkspace

On March 31st, Fumi Nakamura will be putting a new body of work on display at Thinkspace Gallery’s project room. The New York-based Japanese artist works with graphite & color pencils, and has been creating interesting clusters of animals, birds, humans, plant life in various configurations. Last week, the Brooklyn Museum unveiled a special exhibition entitled Keith Haring: 1978-1982. The amazing retrospective chronicles the specific period of time when Keith Haring left his home of Pennsylvania to attend New York’s School of Visual Arts during which he met friends and peers such as Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring’s integration and experimentation of both studio and street works are explored through 155 works on paper, seven videos and 150 archival objects – among them sketchbooks, journals, posters and subway drawings. Earlier this month, the Spoke Art Gallery opened its doors to a solo exhibition from Portland-based artist Ron Ulicny. His collection of New Works feature familiar objects that have been modified in novel ways to give new meaning to the pieces. Last night, the Michael Kohn Gallery hosted a special signing and show from Los Angeles-based painter Camille Rose Garcia (interviewed). Presenting a new collections of paintings from her illustrated version of one of her favorite books, Snow White, Garcia was able to successfully transform the perceptions of the mainstream audience of another famous fairy tale (also see Alice in the Wonderland) to perhaps a more accurate and darker place that is seen in the classic novel from the Brothers Grimm.
