Videos: Jonathan Yeo – “Porn in the USA”

Remember back in July of last year, when Jonathan Yeo brought his series of works and portraits created from collaged pornography to Beverly Hills. It was part of a series of shows put on by Steve Lazarides in a temporary gallery and was entitled “Porn in the USA” (covered). Apparently, they were filming the whole time. Take a look above as Yeo and Lazarides are interviewed – all with the backdrop of some nice behind-the-scenes footage.

While art fair hoping during Armory Week ’11, we bumped into artist and friend Akino Kondoh, who luckily clued us into Bye Bye Kitty!!!, a fantastic exhibition of 16 contemporary Japanese artists opening today at New York’s Japan Society. Showing: ‘Unintended Calculations’ @ Becker Galleries, Vancouver

Augustine Kofie, Jerry Inscoe, Remi/Rough and Scott Sueme were recently brought together for Unintended Calculations, an exhibition well curated by Indigo at Becker Galleries in Vancouver. The group of painters make for a dynamic combination, and each of the foursome presented post-graffiti inspired by abstract expressionism within their work. Signings: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

AM recently got to attend a book signing at the David Zwirner gallery and catch Marcel Dzama’s book signing session. Held on a sunday afternoon, we caught up with Marcel as he graciously spoke and signed books for those that attended. Marcel also took some time to draw a beautiful little sketch for fans who patiently waited in a two hour queue. The year is going by fast – it’s already the middle of March. As usual, there are many interesting art openings to get out to this weekend including a show from Miss Van in France. Magda Danysz Gallery will be hosting Twinkles, a new body of work from the French street artist who hasn’t shown in her home country in a while. Portland-based Japanese modern pop artist, Yumiko Kayukawa opened her seventh solo show at Shooting Gallery on Saturday in SF. The show featured her signature acrylic and ink based works full of color, girls, animals, personal narrative, and imagination. The show’s title, “Rock You in a Tatami Room” is derived from a term Yumiko came up with while creating the works in the show, which reflects her career and life in the U.S., as well as her style. Berlin-based American artist, Brad Downey, has been keeping himself rather busy lately. His first show in the Middle East, We Are Beginning: Personal Projects in Public Spaces, opened this week at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai. In addition, Downey’s work features in the group show What Is Contemporary Art? which opened Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark. The Affordable Art Fair was in London at Battersea Park last week, with no piece on display exceeding the cap of £4,000. We like the fair’s aim of making contemporary art accessible to everyone. Many others clearly appreciate the concept as well, since the AAF is now in its thirteenth year.
