Recommended openings for this weekend (Feb. 18th/19th)

Following a very robust early February due in part to some very high profile shows opening, things slow a lil’ bit the world over this weekend. Leading the charge will be the big POW WOW event over in Hawaii and DABS MYLA’s debut out in the desert at M Modern in Palm Springs alongside a small showing of new works on paper from the legendary SHAG. Looking ahead to March, we’ll have major solo shows to look forward to from the likes of Jose Parla, […]

Video: Highlights from “Suggestivism” @ GCAC

With a show filled with such plethora of strong and iconic works from an A-list of artists, Suggestivism definitely deserves a second look. If our coverage of the opening didn’t encourage you to see the exhibition in person, perhaps this video from Hurley featuring some footage of the art as well as an interview with curator and artist Nathan Spoor will convince you to head over to the Grand Central Art Center before April 17th, the close date. Opening tomorrow at Chelsea’s David Zwirner is the latest solo show by Marcel Dzama, entitled Behind Every Curtain. The exhibition will feature the artist’s film, A Game of Chess, alongside related drawings, sculptures and dioramas. As the name suggests, the movie is based on the classic strategy board game, with Dzama’s fantastic characters dressed in chess piece-themed costumes and masks, battling to the death on top of a checkered board. A new catalog of artwork and film and production stills will be released to accompany […]

Openings: ‘Printmaking Today / ROA Installation’ @ Black Rat Projects

AM had to cut our evening in London short this Thursday due to problems with the trains, so unfortunately missed our VNA friends’ new issue launch, but we did manage to get to Black Rat Projects’ Printmaking Today show. In addition to their great looking and very large multiple layered edition from Swoon (interviewed), BRP also presented a series of secondary market editioned works from such contemporary artists as Peter Blake, Tracy Emin, Grayson Perry, Peter Doig and Damien Hirst as well as editioned work […]

POW WOW ’11 / Interview: 123Klan

Some other participants in this year’s POW WOW will be Scien and Klor, repping the 123Klan from Montreal. Initially formed as a graffiti crew 20 years ago, the klan has branched out to branding, creation of logos, character design, illustration and typefaces, all the while staying true to their first love – graffiti. Take a look after the jump as we sit down with the husband and wife duo for a short interview.

Teaser: “Lined In Lead” @ Gallery Nucleus

As the title suggests, Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra will be holding a group show in March featuring works done in graphite. They’ve assembled a nice list of artists who are involved including Alexandre Day, Andrew Hem, and Rob Sato (full list here). Also participating is Fables cover artist João Ruas who will be contributing six pieces, including the gem seen above. Discuss this show here. Discuss João Ruas here.

POW WOW ’11 / Interview: Ekundayo

Various members of the AM crew will start flying in to Oahu tomorrow for this year’s POW WOW, so it’s time for another interview with a late addition to the party, Ekundayo. He’s already prepped the venue with a wall mural he collaborated on with Aaron Martin (seen here), so we know he’s ready to get his art jam on starting on Wednesday. Take a look at the interview after the jump as we get his thoughts on the event in his hometown among other […]

Openings: David Ellis – “Mola Salsa” @ New Image Art

A couple weeks back, multifaceted art dynamo David Ellis filled New Image Art with his new body of work Mola Salsa. Featuring a more figurative collection of paintings, the work also maintained hints of Ellis’ geometric patterns and linework. We’ll see if he develops this new direction more next month at the Joshua Liner Gallery booth for PULSE New York during Armory Week. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Retna – “Hallelujah World Tour” (NYC)

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening for Retna’s (featured) NYC stop of his Hallelujah World Tour (previewed). Made possible by the folks at Valmorbida and Feedback the star-studded event was attended by many NYC art, fashion and entertainment notables as it led off the Fashion Week festivities. Like us, those that made it into the jam-packed opening were in for a treat as the Los Angeles-based artist took his work to another level. Large scale canvases, sculptures and of course the classic detailed works […]
