Michael De Feo Lecture @ University of Pennsylvania

Street artists don’t get much more iconic than Michael De Feo, also known as “The Flower Guy”, whose street paintings and paste ups are enjoyed the world over. De Feo has shown in galleries around the globe too, but it is his familiar flower image that he is best known and loved for – especially in his native New York. This Thursday, March 18th, Michael has been invited to give a chronological lecture on his street art at the University of Pennsylvania for the school […]

Armory Week ’10: Independent

Along with the Armory Show and the regular satellite fairs (Pulse, Scope, Volta), this year we also attended Independent – a new fair founded by Elizabeth Dee of the non-profit X Initiative and Darren Flook of London’s Hotel gallery. Even among a week packed with so much to see, Independent certainly stood out. For one, unlike the other fairs we attended, with labyrinthine rows and aisles packed with gallery booths, Independent was set up like a museum exhibition, with several floors of open space organically […]

Teaser: Scott Campbell – “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long” @ OHWOW

What steps might an artist take if charged with the task of rewriting monetary policy? Scott Campbell’s Cut Currency series seeks to address this question, with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. Talk about adding value to an increasingly worthless piece of paper, the artist’s work aims to repurpose the greenback in an imaginative and compelling manner. The acclaimed tattoo artist turned gallery provocateur will bring his revisioning of the US Dollar, along with a host of paintings and drawings, to NYC on April 29th for […]

Preview: The Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Preview images from the much anticipated Barnstormers show at Joshua Liner Gallery have started leaking out and from the looks of the individual pieces from Swoon, David Ellis, Kenji Hirata and others, the exhibition is not surprisingly going to be a stunner. But when all the amazing artists that make up the Barnstormers are together in one place, the total will undoubtedly be so much more than just the sum of the individual pieces. What exactly the end result will look like is anyone’s guess […]

Openings: Kevin Cyr and Jessica Hess – “Temporal Surfaces” @ White Walls

Opening alongside Aaron Nagel’s Marks at the Shooting Gallery was Kevin Cyr and Jessica Hess‘ “Temporal Surfaces” at the adjoining White Walls gallery. Cleverly curated by Lainya Maganya, “Temporal Surfaces” brings together two documentarists of the bleak urban and industrial landscape. Jessica Hess’ calming oil-based renditions of derelict billboards and abandoned railway cars accurately captures the temporal and transitional movement of light across these surfaces while invigorating life and beauty into otherwise drab and dreary locales. Kevin Cyr’s (studio visit and interview) seemingly case study-like […]
