Openings: Sam Friedman – “LOVE SONGS” @ Library Street Collective

Showing through April 8 at the Library Street Collective in Detroit is an exhibition from Sam Friedman. For LOVE SONGS, the artist from New York has a series of canvases as well as over 30 paintings on paper on display that look back on his exploration of beach scenes and sunsets. Utilizing a variety of techniques that speak to his background, the colorful work continues his deconstruction and revision of natural landscapes, achieved through a balanced mix of abstraction and figurative elements. Recently in Los Angeles, Michael Page (interviewed) had a show on display that just closed at the Corey Helford Gallery. Nostalgia Kills features fourteen new acrylic and oil paintings that take a look back at childhood – if your childhood was a surreal dreamscape exploding with a vibrant color palette. Page further explains – “Now that I am a father and get to play with my kids everyday, I get to see the world and all its wonders through their eyes. As I look back over the years […]

This Saturday night (February 25th), Alex Gross (interviewed) will be presenting a new body of work collectively entitled Antisocial Network to his fans in Los Angeles. Hosted by Corey Helford Gallery, the new paintings continue to explore the pervasion of technology and social media in our lives and its deleterious effects of pulling us apart instead of bringing us closer together. His characters often have a distracted look on their face as they use cell phones (or even VR headsets) or just seem lost in their own thoughts or […]

POW! WOW! ’17 / Streets: Recap

After showing you some in-progress shots and some sneak peeks of the massive amount of work in progress on the streets of Kakaako, we now have a recap of many of the walls and public interventions that were created for POW! WOW! Hawaii. This year’s event had locations that were more compact and centrally located, leading to a more easily navigated set of murals. As in the past, Cordal tries to shed light with his dark humor on sociopolitical issues, often through the lens of his little men in suits – either […]
