Openings: Brian Viveros – “Matador” @ Thinkspace Gallery

This past Saturday night, the “Dirtyland Troops” were out en masse for Brian Viveros’ sold-out solo exhibition entitled Matador at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Along with a new selection of works (seen in our earlier studio visit) that show a more elaborate detailing, fresh palette, and fusion of artistic concepts, the Riverside-based artists also revealed a large collaborative sculpt with Pretty In Plastic entitled Bullheaded and released of his first ever art book (The DirtyLand), which was published by the gallery. Previews: Thomas Canto – “Still lifes of space time” @ Wunderkammern

Later this month (November 21st), Wunderkammern in Rome will be presenting new works from Thomas Canto, his first solo in Italy. Not one to be constricted by the confines of the traditional canvas, the French artist’s abstract but precise works often feature nylon strings or wall painting that extend past the frame extending the geometries of his artistic vision. Openings: Tristan Eaton – “Legacy” @ Subliminal Projects

Over the weekend, Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles held the opening reception for Tristan Eaton’s new show (presented by Library Street Collective). Legacy is the locally-based artist’s first solo exhibition in the area in almost a decade, a fact not lost on the crowds that lined up to check out the new work and to show their support. Openings: Barry McGee – “China Boo” @ Ratio 3

After an interval of seven years, Barry McGee is back at Ratio 3 in San Francisco and this time he brought along 50 of his friends to join him. This particular show had a few surprises and whole lot of what we love about the Bay Area legend such as painted signs, geometric paintings, customized surfboards, painted bottles, sketches, and photography. Showing: Usugrow – “Organic Contrast” @ Diesel Art Gallery

Showing for one more week through November 13th is Usugrow’s show at Diesel Art Gallery in Shibuya. Entitled Organic Contrast, the exhibition features the Japanese artist’s distinctive mix of calligraphy and Los Angeles “cholo” culture. The exhibition is the locally-based artist’s first solo in Japan in the last 10 years and includes nearly 40 artworks, some of which show a new direction. Photo credit: Miki Matsushima. FriendsWithYou x Moncler (Ginza Flagship Store)

Continuing their commercial endeavors, FriendsWithYou recently collaborated with Moncler on a new collection of  jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters featuring their iconic imagery. The line entitled Happy Virus was created to launch the new flagship store in Tokyo in the top-flight Ginza shopping district. Adding in the Los Angeles-based duo’s graphics, plushes, and other design cues to the displays led to an immersive playground for shoppers who stopped by to check out the Italian-French brand’s new space. Coming up on Saturday night (November 7th), Brian Viveros will be presenting a comprehensive new body of work at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Matador, the exhibition sees the Riverside-based artist further refine his imagery with more time-intensive detailing, drawing ideas from Spanish tradition to infuse his work with a consistency referenced by the title of the show. Tomorrow night in New York, Ryan McGinley will be opening a new solo entitled Winter at Team Gallery’s Soho location. Continuing his series of road trip photo shoots with friends, these new images feature nude figures in upstate New York during the the dead of cold season requiring a mixture of audacity and sacrifice from the participants. As a part of GEISAI∞infinity project curated by Takashi Murakami and Takumi “Kasenyan” Kaseno of the GEISAI Executive Committee, Kaikai Kiki’s Zingaro galleries in Nakano Broadway, Tokyo will be showing Zugzwang, a solo show by Taiwanese-born artist James Jean.
