Upcoming: James Jean – “Zugzwang” @ Hidari Zingaro Gallery

Coming up on November 7th, James Jean (interviewed) will be opening a solo show in Tokyo at the Hidari Zingaro Gallery. Curated by Takashi Murakami, the exhibition will be entitled Zugzwang, a German chess term that describes when you need to move, but you don’t want to because of the terrible conditions and that fact that it might make things worse. For many of the American artist’s Japanese fans, this may be their first opportunity to see his work in person so make plans to be there if you are in the […]

Openings: Geoff McFetridge – “It Looks Like It Says” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, It Looks Like It Says opened at Joshua Liner Gallery, the latest solo from Geoff McFetridge. The exhibition consisted of a series of large scale works as well as smaller works on paper arranged together on one wall of the New York showspace. The Los Angeles-based artist’s first solo with the gallery introduced fans in the area to his minimalistic aesthetic, emphasizing basic forms and plays on perspective. Discuss Geoff McFetridge here.

Previews: Matt Dangler – “Sanctify” @ Copro Gallery

On October 10th, Matt Dangler (interviewed) will be opening a new solo at Copro Gallery, the site of his showing in Los Angeles in 2012 (covered). Entitled Sanctify, the title is perhaps a hint at some of the heavier topics that the gifted painter will be exploring with his surreal vision. An example of what to expect can be seen in the piece above, The Promised Land, as well as in the preview images below. Discuss Matt Dangler here.

Studio Visit: Pryce Lee – “Ceasefire” @ The Garage

During our recent travels abroad to catch the opening of Banksy’s Dismaland, we also made a few stops to see friends of ours across the pond. One was a visit to Pryce Lee’s massive Birmingham compound that serves as both his lair and studio as he prepped for his upcoming show at Amsterdam’s The Garage. The exhibition entitled Ceasefire is a step up to another level for the bi-continental artist. Utilizing more than just his signature bullets, Pryce’s fresh works reaches into his arsenal for additional ammo to […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “On Our Hands” @ Jacob Lewis Gallery / Pace Prints

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 5 years since since street artist, activist and most recently outlaw (according to the mayor of Detroit), Shepard Fairey has ‘formally’ had a solo show in New York City. But as you likely know (if you are reading this), the American artist doesn’t stand still for very long. Let’s not kid ourselves with the math equation here, the Los Angeles-based artist and his posse still go as hard as any, 26+ years in the game. He recently finished up his second […]

Streets: Os Gemeos (Lithuania)

The murals are coming fast and furious now that the twins are on a roll. Hot on the heels of work in New York, Naestved, and Minsk, Os Gemeos have now moved on to Lithuania for their latest project. For the third Vilnius Street Art Festival, the legendary duo from Brazil painted one of their classic yellow characters climbing out of a wall, smartly leaving some of the in situ graffiti in place on the wall. The piece is a also tribute to their grandfather, who is […]

Showing: “Invisible College” @ Fort Wayne Museum of Art

With this being the last week of the Invisible College group exhibition at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, now would be a good time for a recap. Co-curated by Andrew and Shawn Hosner of Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery and Josef Zimmerman from the museum, the title references the fact that many of the artists on the roster didn’t take a traditional art education path to where their careers are now. The show will featured murals and installations from Andrew Schoultz, Brett Amory, Cyrcle, Mark Dean Veca, and Troy Lovegates as well as original works from Adam Caldwell, Adrian Falkner, Alex Yanes, Allison Sommers, Amanda Joseph, Andrew Hem, Brian M. […]

Previews: Richard Colman – “Faces, Figures, Places and Things.” @ Chandran Gallery

For its inaugural exhibition opening on September 25th, Chandran Gallery has chosen to show all new works from Richard Colman collectively entitled Faces, Figures, Places and Things. Along with new works featuring his recognizable imagery that explores “narratives on human sexuality, strategy and societal hierarchy,” the locally-based artist has been at the San Francisco showspace working on an ambitious installation that will cover the entire ground floor of the gallery. We must admit, these preview images have piqued our interest and we hope this is true for you as […]

Streets / Videos: Os Gemeos (Minsk)

For the last several years, summer in Europe means a lot of street art festivals producing some amazing murals. This year, Brazilian twin brothers Os Gemeos are spending some time on the old continent, but taking a bit of a different route than majority. Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo recently visited Minsk in Belarus, taking part in the Vulica Brasil Festival that celebrates Belorus-Brasilian urban art. Like their recent NYC escapades (covered), the duo decided to paint a new figurative piece there. Similar to their silos painted in Vancouver last […]

Previews: Randy Hage – “Façade” @ Flower Pepper Gallery

On October 10th (6-10pm), Flower Pepper Gallery in Old Town Pasadena will be presenting Randy Hage’s Façade. The New York-based artist has spent many years photographing the gradually disappearing street level Mom & Pop storefronts in SoHo and then recreating them in stunning three dimensional detail to preserve memories of their “hand painted signs, layers of architecture, wonderful patinas and intriguing history.” Take a look at him at work below as well as a preview of some of the pieces that will be on display and make plans to […]
