After a six month break, HHH gallery in Tokyo will be opening its doors again on the 21st of March. Coinciding with the start of the local sakura season, their first show in 2016 will be Unknown Scorcher, an exhibition from Meguru Yamaguchi (featured). This week’s Art Focus highlights the meticulously detailed drawings of Ben Tolman and his surreal imagery. In some of his work (seen above), the Washington DC-based artist builds urban environments with a god-like eye as the viewer is able to take in the scene from a distance. Last weekend, Zevitas Marcus in Los Angeles hosted the opening of a new solo show from Eric Yahnker. Noah’s Yacht features works created from colored pencils and graphite on paper, rendered with the locally-based artist’s continued clever commentary on issues that afflict our society today touching on topics like the current election cycle and police violence. Rounding out the show are various sculptural works, installations, and conceptual pieces all showing his versatility and knowledge of pop culture and the social-political climate, often times intermixing the two. Not long after the duo’s US debut show (covered), Interesni Kazki’s Waone flew to Varkala, India, where he painted his first black and white mural. The Ukrainian artist, known for his surreal public works, colorful paintings, and elaborate drawings, was able to fulfill his goal of creating a B&W mural, resulting in this striking wall being painted on a local rooftop with the help of his family and friends. Releases: KAWS – “Man’s Best Friend” Print Set

Pace Prints just announced their newest print release with KAWS. Man’s Best Friend is a monumental set of 10 black and white screenprints, similar to the installation shown at his 2014 show at Honor Fraser Gallery (covered). Based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts, the prints are KAWS’ take on the popular cartoon. By combining macro views of lines that comprise of the forms of Snoopy, Woodstock and friends, along with his signature XX, the Brooklyn-based artist created appealing abstract images. Victori + Mo gallery in New York is currently showing Chaos and Wild Again by local artist Brian Willmont. Along with working with him on a solo exhibition, the gallery also recently successfully introduced his work with a booth at the Volta Art Fair during Armory Week in New York. At the end of last month, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. unveiled a portrait of actor Kevin Spacey painted by Jonathan Yeo that will be on view through October. The event featured an appearance by Yeo as well as Spacey in character as Frank Underwood in his role for Netflix’s hit series House of Cards, marking the first time a fictional president had a painting of them hung in the portrait gallery of the institution (although not in the hall of real presidential portraits). Opening last week, Camille Rose Garcia’s Animus Chrysalis Mortis takes viewers to vibrant and lush gardens while exploring many of life’s tropes including creation and death. There is no subtlety with the LA-based artist’s journey, as seen through the lens of an acid trip seemingly lit by black lights. Last month Slow Culture moved from LA’s Highland Park to Chinatown, and on March 4th, they opened the PDFW: Performance. Drawing. Film. Writing. group show by THE DFW crew.
