Showing: Brad Downey – ‘Souvenirs’ @ Ruttkowski;68

Ruttkowski;68 gallery in Cologne, Germany recently opened a new solo by American artist Brad Downey. Titled Souvenirs, the show features short videos and a series of everyday objects and utilitarian materials juxtapozed in a new context creating a novel meaning. The work raises issues about everything from identity (with his flags drawings), privacy, to self destruction. His series of works with keys touchbase on the notion of access and security. With his techniques of détournement and re-contextualization, Downey reinterprets banal objects to create revelatory artworks. These act as ‘souvenirs‘ as […]

Publications: JR for NYT Magazine Walking New York Issue

On the cover of this month’s New York Times Magazine is a special project prepared by JR (interviewed) for their Walking New York issue. Focused on the issue of immigration as of late, the famous street artist decided to photograph recent immigrants walking down the streets of Nolita and in turn pasting their images on city streets, where they are often invisible despite there being approximately 3.1 million of them in NYC. The final chosen subject for the cover was Elmar Aliyev, a 20-year-old waiter at Old Baku, an […]

Fashion: Bäst, Paul Insect, and Rostarr for Cocurata

Artists Bäst, Paul Insect, and Rostarr have recently collaborated with a new fashion label, Cocurata, on their inaugural collection. Bringing an urban sensibility to the design, the new line entitled Extraction is a nice start to the company, founded by George Gorrow and George Benias. Their idea was to arrange a “direct exchange between artist and artisan – a street artist working with a jeweler, a sculptor collaborating with a perfumer or a painter creating bespoke, ready to wear pieces – that would result in artwork […]

Previews: Sowat – “Ars Longa Vita Brevis” @ Richard & Lefeuvre Gallery (Switzerland)

Following his recent print release (see here), French-American artist Sowat, member of the French graffiti crew DMV or Da Mental Vaporz, is opening his solo exhibition at Richard & Lefeuvre Gallery in Geneva on the 23rd of April. Ars Longa Vita Brebis features a new body of work using acrylic and spraypaint on canvas. Always looking for new techniques, with a bamboo stick or a spray can, Sowat’s style is sometimes understandable, with some secret words and messages appearing suddenly within the composition, sometimes abstract, mixing energetic lines with composed and precised […]

Streets: Ron English (New York)

Over the weekend, Ron English (featured) made the most of his turn at the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York with a mural that was wheatpasted then hand finished with paint. The imagery chosen is a good representation of his work with the background being the American flag made up of modified company logos and slogans that speak to English’s satirical attack on consumerism, while the center features one of his most recognized surreal characters – the Temper Tot or “Baby Hulk.” Take a look at more photos and a […]

Upcoming: Invader – “Wipe Out” @ The Qube (Hong Kong)

After some advance street activity (covered here & here) in Hong Kong earlier this year, Invader will be returning with a show opening on May 2nd at The Qube, PMQ (35 Aberdeen Street, Central). Entitled Wipe Out, the exhibition (presented by the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation [HOCA] & Le French May) will be the French mosaic specialist’s first solo in HK. The title of the show comes from the famed street artist’s experience with his work earlier this year in HK where 90% of his pieces were removed by cleaning […]

Streets: Bezt x Natalia Rak (Caserta)

While Sainer was taking a studio break by painting a large mural in Lisbon (covered), the other half of Etam Cru, Bezt was invited to Caserta, Italy for the Memorie Urbane Festival where he was joined by his fiancee Natalia Rak. As you can see, this art couple collaborated on a diptych mural painted on the opposite sides of the same five story building. Titled Romeo & Julia, the mural consists of their portraits facing each other around the building. Bezt painted Natalia and the other way around, utilizing similar […]

Openings: Patrick Martinez – “FORBIDDEN FRUIT” @ New Image Art

Last week at New Image Art in Los Angeles, the versatile Patrick Martinez unveiled new mixed media works with a show entitled FORBIDDEN FRUIT. The fresh work combines his signature neon light technique with sculpture & painting, taking inspiration from things like hip hop and minority culture. Examples include guns mingling and appearing with common place items like fruits highlighted by neon lights, or imagery products are placed on the wall like strange hybrids – all giving insight into Martinez’s artistic vision. Streets: Sainer (Lisbon)

One half of the art duo known as Etam Cru, Sainer, recently continued his collaboration with Underdogs collective in Portugal. After releasing an exclusive limited edition lithograph with them last year (covered), the Polish artist just visited Lisbon again and painted an impressive new mural. Covering the entire facade of a 10 story building, Crossroads is a clean example of Etam Cru’s recognizable work. Done in a slightly new style which Sainer has been trying out lately, the image features an older woman crossing the road while smoking […]
