Streets: World Roundup (May 21 – May 27)

Leading off our summary of last week’s notable public art is this mural from Philippe Hérard (photo by morac19, via Juxtapoz). Utilizing a mixture of paint and newspapers, Hérard is able to create a whimsical piece for the streets of Paris. Teaser: “The Vertical Gallery” @ The Standard (DTLA)

This Thursday, May 31st, The Standard Hotel in Downtown LA will be unveiling The Vertical Gallery, a reference to their stairwell which has acted as canvas for a number of select artists. One of our favourite UK exhibitions from 2011 was Kid Acne’s Kill Your Darlings retrospective at Sheffield Museum’s Millennium Gallery, where the artist first presented his Stabby Women film. The film had us hooked, and the B&W imagery captivated audiences in the gallery as his stabby women were brought to life with equal measures of heroism and vengeance. Rewind: May 21 – May 27

Currently showing at Fondation Beyeler is the first exhibition ever devoted by a Swiss museum to American artist Jeff Koons. The show runs until September 2, 2012 and features a focus on three bodies of works: The New, Banality, and Celebration. Detroit Beautification Project

A project that was first hinted at here appears to have come to fruition in the Motor City. We have already shared works from Sever and Reyes for the Detroit Beautification Project, but now we have a closer look at the multitude of artists (many of them MSK affiliated) and the murals they painted centered mostly in Hamtramck. Video: Mear One – “Snow White and the Huntsman” Mural

To promote the upcoming release of Snow White and the Huntsman, a pop-up gallery has opened in Los Angeles (7710 Melrose Aveneue). Along with costumes from Colleen Atwood, the film’s Oscar-winning designer, fans will also be greeted by a mural from Mear One (interviewed). The unique 12 foot piece featuring a moonlit forest scene is painted entirely on a mirror with some of it drifting onto the surrounding walls. Preview: Yue Minjun, Mark Jenkins, and Aakash Nihalani @ Carmichael Gallery

This Saturday, May 26th, the Carmichael Gallery will be opening a show featuring work from three artists coming from diverse backgrounds. The first is a giant in the Chinese contemporary art scene – Yue Minjun. Working with the original publisher, two of each of the 28 large format lithographs from the Smile-Isms set (edition of 45) will be made available.
