Openings: JR x Massimo Bottura – “Le Reffettorio Paris”

Last month, Le Reffettorio Paris opened its doors with the help of famed chef Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana and artist JR (interviewed). Housed in the crypts of the historic Madeleine church in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, the concept behind the space fits nicely with the setting. Taking surplus ingredients from some of the city’s finest restaurants, Bottura and his team aim to serve 100 of the most socially vulnerable every night with a multi course meal – an upscale soup kitchen if you will. Last week, we gave you a taste of the art going down at this year’s The Crystal Ship art festival (also see 2016 & 2017) with photos of sweet new mural from Sainer. Streets: Escif – ‘Open Borders’ Mural @ Palais de Tokyo (Paris)

From May 4th, Palais de Tokyo in Paris will pay tribute to the history and legacy of the May 1968 events with a intervention by Escif, where he reproduced some of the famous writings from that period of student revolts. His creation completes the project, which was started in 2015 by Greek artist Stelios Faitakis, who realized two murals dedicated to the legacy of the situationist movement and civil unrest of May 1968. Releases: KAWS – “Pinnochio” Wood Sculptural Edition

This morning, KAWS announced the surprise release of a PINNOCHIO wood sculptural edition on his IG. Produced in a run of 100, this signed and numbered iteration of the famous puppet, remixed with the Brooklyn-based signature aesthetic, is a wood version of his previously released vinyl figure. This collaboration with Disney, made by Karimoku and Medicom Toy, is sure to be a hit with his fans seeing releases are rare in this medium. Streets: D*Face – “Turn Coat” (Paris)

While in town last week for the opening of his show (covered) at Galerie Itinerrance, D*Face (interviewed) was able to get up with a massive mural in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. For those keeping score, this is the second piece (also see 2017) the British street artist has painted for “Street Art 13” project organized by the gallery. Entitled Turn Coat, the new work features some of D’s signature imagery and touches like the Lichtenstein inspired look and the wings. Photo credit: Spraying Bricks. Discuss D*Face here.

Upcoming: D*Face – “FORNEVER” @ Galerie Itinerrance

Earlier tonight, Galerie Itinerrance in Paris opened up a new show from D*Face (interviewed) entitled FORNEVER. For his first solo in France, the British artist presented a diverse mix of paintings on canvas, sculptures, installations, HPMs, serigraphs, and some fresh assemblages (seen here). The new imagery deals with how nothing is forever, with the old replaced with the new and the tensions that come with it. Of course, D also took time to paint a large mural for his fans in the City of Love (more on that later). […]

Tomorrow night (April 20th) in Brooklyn, Lydia Fong, Todd James, Steve Powers, and Alicia McCarthy will be putting on a show at Muddguts. For those in the know, as well as from the artwork used to promote the exhibition, it looks like Fong (aka Barry McGee) will be joining his Street Market buddies James and Powers and has invited his Mission School art movement colleague McCarthy to the party as well. Earlier this month in Belgium, the third iteration of the The Crystal Ship art festival (also see 2016 & 2017) welcomed in an international roster of artists to create murals and art installations in the coastal city of Ostend. One of the standout walls comes from Sainer (featured) of the Etam Cru entitled Podkarpacie, a painterly piece which appears to be named after a province in Poland.
