Showing: Vhils – “Momentum” @ Danysz Gallery (Paris)

Earlier this week, Danysz Gallery’s space in Paris presented a selection of new works from Vhils (interviewed). Entitled Momentum, the exhibition begins a new cycle of reflection that focuses on the idea of fossilization – “of capturing various symbolic material elements from our present-day culture in order to preserve them for the future as a fossil-like memory of the current times.” Further refining his unique techniques of mark-making, the Lisbon-based artist has created a compelling new set of works that demonstrate the breadth of his practice. Vhils further […]

Showing: Beyond The Streets (NYC)

After an inaugural showing last year in Los Angeles (covered), it was only a matter of time before the BEYOND THE STREETS  hit what many consider one of the birth places of graffiti in the US. New York’s version of the exhibition (curated by Roger Gastman) celebrating graffiti, street art, and beyond once again featured a stunning roster of some of the most well known and seminal artists in the genre. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, photography, mural art to site-specific installations from 100+ artists, posting all the photos […]

Streets: Nuart Aberdeen (Part III)

The other day, we teased some of the new public works that were being created during the recently held Nuart Aberdeen 2019. Today, we wanted to showcase the other seven artists whose work we’ve enjoyed during our stay. Working around the idea of telling stories, the artists uncovered less known parts of the city’s history (Vhils), revealed another side of important events (Axel Void), and referenced the unfortunate reality the city is facing (Strøk). Scattered around the city center, these pieces show the variety of […]

Releases: Vhils – “Prevail” Sculptural Edition & “Predominate” Print

Although in Miami for his now open show (covered), Vhils (interviewed) also has something going on for his fans at home. Tomorrow, December 5th at 4pm GMT, the Lisbon-based artist will be releasing some editions through the Underdogs Gallery webstore that celebrates one of his favorite public artworks (which has now been demolished) in the capital city. Most interesting is the sculptural edition entitled Prevail (edition of 20 + 5 AP), a laser engraved fragment of the demolished building that features the image of the mural. Because of the […]

Tomorrow (November 30th) is the public opening of Ethereal at Goldman Global Arts in Miami, Vhils’ (interviewed) latest solo show. Timed perfectly to coincide with this year’s Basel Week Miami, the debut solo exhibition for the gallery inside The Wynwood Walls will highlight the Portuguese artist’s unique mark-making as well as his skills with multiple techniques and mediums. To welcome in fans who come for a visit, he has also created an intervention on the facade of the gallery that mirrors the pieces he leaves on the streets all around the world. Vhils […]

Upcoming: Festival Iminente 2018, London

After a successful third edition in Lisbon back in September, Festival Iminente will be coming back to London’s Old Truman Brewery for the second time between the 19th and 21st of October. Designed as a materialization of the creative movement and multicultural atmosphere that is flourishing in the Portuguese capital by founders and curators, Vhils and Underdogs Gallery, the festival aims to combine new music with new art. One of the highlights of the recent event in Lisbon was the unannounced DJ set by legendary DJ, Fatboy […]

Streets: Vhils (Lisbon)

The organizers of the popular Festival Iminente in Lisbon have teamed up with Amnesty International for their ongoing Brave Walls project. Using the recognition of the event to address important issues, their most recent effort resulted in a new mural by Vhils (interviewed), demanding justice for Brazilian human rights defender Marielle Franco. The Rio city councilor and her driver were shot dead by two men in what appears to have been a targeted assassination on the 14th of March, which caused a series of protests held across […]
