Streets: Wynwood Walls Update (Miami) Part II

Wow, it looks like Wynwood Walls is really trying to the get the jump on this year’s US rendition of Art Basel. After alerting you to some RETNA activity down in Miami and then a subsequent update (ROA, Gaia, Nunca, HOW & NOSM, the Date Farmers, Faile, and Bast), it’s time for another look as Kenny Scharf, Interesni Kazki, and Saner & Sego have rolled into town and we have some new pieces from the Date Farmers and Vhils as well. More photos after the […]

Nuart Festival ’11: Vhils

Yesterday, we brought you Escif’s contributions to this year’s Nuart Festival. Today, we focus on another great street artist, the Lisbon-based Vhils (filmed) who introduced his unique techniques to his fans in Norway. Not only did he work his magic inside with this double skull chiseling, he also worked on a piece outside on a similar theme. AM photographer Henrik Haven was on hand to document the action.  More after the jump…

Streets: Vhils (UK)

Vhils, whom we recently filmed working on a wall for the Post No Bills gallery in Venice, California has been spotted chiseling away on the other side of the pond in the UK. This newest piece was commissioned by the Urban Outfitters in Exeter and also features what looks to be a specially constructed facade to accommodate the Portuguese artist’s unique techniques. More photos after the jump…

Streets: Walk & Talk Festival (Azores) Part II

Besides the amazing boat mural that Phlegm painted for the Walk & Talk Festival in Azores, Portugal, there were also some other familiar names who got up some quality work. Vhils did his home country proud with some chiseled local portraiture, Interesni Kazki continued to impress (see Ibiza) with another large surreal mural, and Escif threw up a cryptic wall with a dinosaur and block lettering. These fore-mentioned artists along with 26 others (20 of them from Portugal) certainly went a long way in fulfilling the vision of tranforming the […]

AM Films: Vhils – “Deconstruction”

Recently, we brought you some photos of street artist Vhils working on a wall outside of the Post No Bills gallery in Venice, California. This particular piece was created in conjunction with the European Bailout Show (covered) that opened last week and really showcases what the Portuguese artist is know for – imprinting his work permanently into the surface of whatever he is working with whatever tools he deems necessary. AM filmmaker Carlos Gonzalez was on hand to capture some of the creative process in the footage […]

FAME Festival ’11: Vhils

Plaster, concrete, paper, wood – where other people see construction materials and tools, the visionary Vhils sees art. After working on a wall outside of the Post No Bills gallery in the States in conjunction with the European Bailout Show (covered), the Lisbon-based street artist traveled to Italy to do his part for the annual Fame Fest. Take a look at some of the other pieces he produced while in town as well as a video of some of the shenanigans that went down.

Openings: “European Bailout Show” @ Post No Bills

This past Thursday, Post No Bills gallery held their second gallery exhibit which featured works by the likes of Anthony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Ian Francis, Jonathan Yeo, JR, Mode 2, Paul Insect, Stanley Donwood, Vhils and Zevs. Titled as the European Bailout Show, this exhibition focused entirely on some of Europe’s most interesting artists working today. It was clear from the large number of attendees that Steve Lazarides’ new California venture continues a successful run especially after coming off the highly touted Faile show. This […]

Streets: Vhils (Los Angeles) for Post No Bills

Yesterday, Portuguese-born artist Vhils, who’s known for creating works of art directly into surfaces, visited the Post No Bills gallery space and sketched his signature style onto an adjacent wall. Utilizing his trademark tools such as drills and hammers, he produced yet another amazing work of art that continues to place him among one of the most interesting and creative artists working in the scene right now. This new work of art goes hand in hand with the upcoming exhibit that will take place at […]

Streets: Conor Harrington x Vhils (Lisbon)

Reminiscent of the fantastic JR x Vhils collaboration we witnessed in LA during the Eurotrash invasion last year, it looks like Vhils has busted out his tools again and has hooked up with another street artist for a project. As you know from our feature his recent piece in Lisbon, Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) was in town and apparently also put up this piece with some of Vhils’ special techniques although the effects weren’t as evident as the JR collab, perhaps since it was not as […]

Streets: Brad Downey in Lisbon (Crono Project)

Berlin-based American artist, Brad Downey, has been keeping himself rather busy lately. His first show in the Middle East, We Are Beginning: Personal Projects in Public Spaces, opened this week at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai. In addition, Downey’s work features in the group show What Is Contemporary Art? which opened Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark. Later in March, he’s taking part in the group exhibition Wilde Zeichen at the Kunsthalle Krems museum in Krems, Austria. In a post […]
