So, it looks like the new spread for Vanity Fair that we mentioned a while back finally materialized. Taken by David Lachapelle (who just opened a show at PRISM), the photograph features RETNA (featured) in front of his West Hollywood mural (covered) with a little help from photoshop it seems. As an added bonus, we have for you after the jump a video that surfaced recently featuring footage of RETNA’s WeHo mural as well as an interview…
A couple weeks ago, the Carmichael Gallery hosted an exhibition from influential photographers and Angelenos Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. The retrospective featured select images from the father and son duo and documented their well-known love affair with LA Latino street life, street art, and graffiti with decades of work under their belt. Entitled Like Father, Like Son, the exhibition consisted of 25 limited edition prints from each photographer, including black and white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints. In a similar vein to street pranksters TrustoCorp’s product rebranding campaigns, some new items made it onto the grocery racks courtesy of Ron English (featured). While in Venice, California for his show that just opened at the Post No Bills gallery (covered), the self-proclaimed disseminator of “popoganda” also made time to drop off some modified cereal boxes for local shoppers at a Ralph’s to chance upon. If you happen to find one yourself, send it to Ron and he’ll sign it for you. Discuss Ron […]
Another pitstop for the AM crew several weeks ago as we walked PULSE Los Angeles was the booth housing the offerings from LeBasse Projects. For their part in the art fair, the gallery brought with them paintings from Nate Frizzell (interviewed), Katrin Fridriks, and Joshua Petker as well as some sculptures. Take a look at more photos taken for us by Carlos Gonzalez after the jump…
AM recently attended the opening of Abstractions at New York’s Opera Gallery. The special group show housed two separate groups of artists. The first was a retrospective from the old school abstract movement from the 1940 to present day. Original works from artists such as Miro, Francis, Soulages, Hartung, Fontana, Arman and Matta were on display. This contrasted with the second group of names from today’s artistic movement like Rostarr, Bast, Ron English, Saber and more who have evolved in their own form of abstraction. […]
A couple nights ago, the Minotaur event put on by Lazarides kicked off at the The Old Vic Tunnels, also the site of 2010′s Hell’s Half Acre exhibition. This time around, the theme was an old Greek legend and depending on your choice for price of admission, dining was included from top Michelin-starred chefs. Of course for us, the art was the focus of the night including offerings from Stanley Donwood, Jonathan Yeo, Antony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Doug Foster, 3D, Ian Francis, ATMA, Michael Najjar […]
On September 24th, Tim Barber unveiled a new body of work at Tokyo-based Yuka Tsuruno. Welcome to Earth sees the established New York-based photographer return to the Japanese gallery, where he showed in February 2010. In a departure from the bold color shots shown at his 2001 exhibition earlier this year in New York, the new series opts instead for a subdued black and white format. Long known as a behind the scenes player in the art world, Barber has slowly but surely made his […]
As we walked out the elevators last week to head into the main exhibition hall for Art Platform, something caught out attention in the side atrium. Imagine our surprise and delight as our eyes laid on Ai Weiwei’s Snake Bag, one of his most moving and intriguing works. The undulating 55 feet long serpent is created from 360 children’s backpacks and commemorates the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake. When the artist – activist saw the scattered backpacks in the rubble left by the thousands of children […]
Last Thursday evening, Monterrey, Mexico-based artist, Rene Almanza unveiled a series of 50 20″x18″ graphite/watercolor paintings at Fifty24SF. The show is entitled Stranger, the definition which the artist states as “a foreigner, a resident alien, one in the house of another as a guest, visitor, or intruder, a person or thing that is unknown or with whom one is unacquainted, one who does not belong to or is kept from the activities of a group, one not privy or party to an act, contract, or […]
Just a few hours before his latest show at Post No Bills gallery (covered), Ron English (featured) took the time to adorned the fame Barracuda wall with his signature style. The wall which sits near the intersection of Melrose and Fairfax features four different images which touch upon the satirical aspect of English’s artwork. It also features a variety of pasters which are now showing up all across the city of Los Angeles. More photos after the jump…
As veterans of the annual Baby Tattooville art retreat know, how the final Art Jam collaborative painting ends up looking is nothing like how it starts. This year was no different as the 30 artists in attendance put their mark on the extra large canvas to accommodate the reunion year. The final composition was surprisingly pretty balanced despite the inevitable drama that develops in the process, perhaps in no small part due to the leadership skills of Captain Jeff Soto (interviewed). More photos after the jump […]
We were browsing the always excellent Erratic Phenomena recently and came across this painting from Andy Kehoe where one of his creatures gaze out into the cosmos. If this painting and the title of the show, Arise, Feral Night, is any indication, then darkness has indeed fallen over the autumnal world of the Pittsburgh-based painter. The show opens October 14th at Roq La Rue. Discuss this show here. Discuss Andy Kehoe here.
