Interviews: Lala Abaddon

Lala Abaddon is a New York-based artist that is getting more and more attention with her unique woven prints. After showing her works in several group shows, having them included in charity art auctions and achieving great results, she is now fully focused on her upcoming solo show at Castor Gallery in NYC in March 2015. So, while most of art world was focused to Miami, we visited her studio, saw some of the large works she is working on, witnessed how much patience and passion […]

Studio Visit: Phlegm

We recently had a peek inside Phlegm‘s little shed at the edge of Epping forest in London, seeing him adding final touches to his upcoming etching release that he has been working between his travels last year or so. The artist that is known for large, elaborate, narrative murals he has been creating everywhere from Sri Lanka to New Zealand, recently returned from his last world trip, and went straight to work finishing this long awaited edition. Working till late in the night in his tiny, 1.5 meters wide […]

Studio Visits: Alfred Steiner – “Likelihood of Confusion” @ Joshua Liner

Set to open his first solo exhibition tomorrow with Joshua Liner Gallery, Alfred Steiner welcomed us into his laboratory in Chelsea. The American artist has long been on our radar with his amazingly realistic watercolors and creative approach to assembling iconic symbols & images based on the long standing Freudian technique of free association. On every piece he creates, the viewer will likely find something memorable and thought provoking. Entitled Likelihood of Confusion, this new body of work will not only include his signature watercolors, but also two oil fiberboards that […]

Studio Visits / Previews: 100taur – “Monsters In My Closet” @ Artoyz

Following his group shows in the US and recent installation at the Toulouse Museum in France, we visited the cabinet of curiosities of lowbrow artist 100taur in Toulouse ahead of his upcoming solo show ‘Monsters in my closet’ at the Artoyz gallery in Paris. The French artist’s work is multidisciplinary and his creativity expands from graffiti, paintings, drawings, engraving to sculpture, installations and taxidermy. His sources of inspiration come from Greek mythology, hybrid creatures like Chiron, known for his kindness, knowledge and skills with medicine, but also Japanese […]

Entitled Future Tense, the new body of work continues to explore mankind’s place in a changing world overcome with advertising, propaganda, and new technology. Studio Visits: Jonas Lund – Studio Practice” @ Boetzelaer|Nispen

We had the chance to visit Jonas Lund’s Studio Practice project at Boetzelaer|Nispen in Amsterdam on the last day of the production process. By now, the “white cube” gallery space got a full art studio makeover with paint marks and scars of art making on every wall and surface. The works produced are scattered around the space, some hanging as the accepted ones, some marked as denied, and some still waiting for evaluation by the advisory board members. We’ve also got to have a look into a 300 pages book […]
Ludo 01

Studio Visits / Previews: Ludo – ‘The Chaos Theory’ @ Lazarides Rathbone

We popped by the studio of Ludo (interviewed) in Paris as he prepares for his London solo show The Chaos Theory at Lazarides Rathbone. Using his trademark neon green and monochromatic palette, the Frenchman’s new body of work illustrates themes of chaos, through a battalion of futuristic mechanical butterflies. Blending nature and human technology with anatomical and technical precision, Ludo references the accelerated pace of life in which people continually strive to keep up with the ongoing race against the clock. The frail and ephemeral butterfly image has […]

Studio Visits: Carl Krull – “Seismic” @ V1 Gallery

Ahead of Carl Krull’s current show at V1 Gallery, which opened over the weekend, we paid a visit to his studio to take a look at the new work. Situated at the top of an ancient building in Copenhagen overlooking the harbor, the impressive work space is a perfect setting to get the creative juices going and has indeed housed other artists throughout its history. Seismic is an appropriate title for Krull’s new work as he uses a very distinctive technique to produce his images […]

Studio Visits: Casey Gray – ‘Of Land & Sea’ @ Circuit 12 Contemporary

We’ve been enthusiastically watching the work of Casey Gray over a number of years, since we first came across his work back in 2009 during Basel Week in Miami. To say his work has progressed since his early stencil compositions is an understatement. Using aerosol paint as his one and only medium, Gray has shifted from the multicoloured stencil explosions we first saw from him through to a level of maturity we’ve not seen elsewhere from a stencil artist. Recent beach portraits and landscapes along with […]

Studio Visits/Previews: Casey Weldon – “Novel Relic” @ Roq la Rue

Nestled deep in the foothills of the Cascades, Casey Weldon paints diligently to finish up several pieces for his solo show Novel Relic, opening at the Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle on August 7th. Themes of nature and old technology collide with a color palette borrowed directly from the television color bars seen in several pieces. The serene scenery around the lakeside property has had a heavy influence in these new paintings, as a native flower morphs into a gramophone and ferns become television […]
