Last week, the Mary Boone Gallery hosted the largest collection of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds that we have seen since his triumphant exhibition in London at the Tate Modern in 2010. Although much smaller in scale when compared to that museum showing which included 100 million pieces, seeing so many of these tiny porcelain seeds piled together really gives the viewer a sense of the amazing amount of work that went into the production. AM recently visited Taiwan to catch Ai Weiwei’s absent exhibition at the TFAM (Taipei Fine Arts Museum). As the show’s title implies, Ai Weiwei was not present for the opening as he’s still working on clearing his previous “issues” with his home country’s government. Next Thursday, November 17th (6-8pm), the Paul Kasmin gallery will be presenting a gold set of Ai Weiwei’s bronze sculptures, Zodiac Heads, to the public. Other larger renditions of the twelve animal heads, each depicting a part of the Chinese zodiac, have already been shown at the Pulitzer Fountain (Central Park) in New York and the LACMA in Los Angeles, but this showing will be accompanied by a book launch. The recently named (according to ArtReview) most powerful artist in the world, Ai Weiwei, has broken his silence over his “enforced disappearance” with an interview in W Magazine’s upcoming sixth annual art issue. The Chinese artist and dissident also directed the cover shoot by Max Vadukul in a series of shots inspired by his own photography while living in NYC in the 80′s including images from the Tompkins Square riots. As we walked out the elevators last week to head into the main exhibition hall for Art Platform, something caught out attention in the side atrium.
