AJ Fosik, Dan Witz, Doze Green, Invader, James Marshall (Dalek), Jeff Soto, Jim Houser, Judith Supine, Mario Martinez (Mars-1) and WK Interact will fill the walls of the South Beach pop-up space, while murals from Invader and Jeff Soto for the continuation of Wynwood Walls will round out the New […]

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’10 – Friends With You

It just wouldn’t be Art Basel Miami week without fantastical Floridians Friends With You. This year, the energetic and imaginative duo of Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval will be presenting Rainbow City, a large-scale outdoor installation that in their words addresses “the potency of interaction, ritual, and play.” Constructed in Miami’s Design District, the site-specific collection of 40 simple air-filled structures—some up to 40 feet high—are meant to embrace and tower over guests, creating a feeling of reverence. And to add to the excitement, Pharrell […]

Studio Visits / Interviews: Greg Lamarche

Although we’ve been familiar with Greg Lamarche’s work for some time, it took seeing his installation at Scope NY 2010 (covered) for us to start to realize that there was definitely much more to his art than cutting and pasting paper. From his obsessive stockpiling of found and vintage papers to his keen ability to highlight specific or overlooked aspects of those materials, such as bar codes or patterns, Lamarche has a unique talent for collage and a clever approach to the medium that is […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10 – The Island

Art collectors who are fans of the show Lost might just have their dream come true with this just revealed art project planned for Art Basel Week in Miami. Aptly dubbed The Island, those lucky enough to attend will be whisked away by motorboat from docks at the Mondrian Hotel to Flagler Memorial Island in Biscayne Bay for a first of it’s kind beachfront exhibition and sculpture park. Organized by Shamim M. Momin of non-profit art organization Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) together with Aaron […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10 – Barry McGee @ Ratio 3

Already a key player in exhibitions with OHWOW (teased) and Roberts & Tilton (teased) this coming Art Basel Week in Florida, Barry McGee will continue the all out assault on South Beach with a selection of new works for Ratio 3. One of the founding fathers of the Mission School art movement, the Bay Area street artist is known for his mix-matched “clusters”, incorporating figurative panels of his iconic characters with complimentary panels of geometric patterns and text-based pieces of his many pseudonyms used while […]

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’10 – Camille Rose Garcia @ Michael Kohn Gallery

In a clever curatorial touch, Camille Rose Garcia (interviewed) will be showing a new selection of her phosphorescent work alongside Ryan McGinness’ Blacklight series (teased), both sharing uniquely psychedelic color palettes in stylistically disparate ways, with Michael Kohn Gallery during Art Basel South Beach. Raised on a healthy dose of Disneyland, the Southern Californian artist is known for her colorful reinterpretations of the whimsical narratives inherent to childhood fairy tales, yet executed with playfully sinister overtones. In the Spring, she even had the honor of […]

Openings: ‘Marks & Stencils’ pop-up gallery, London

Last Thursday, AM was in London’s Soho district to attend the opening of Marks & Stencils: the Pictures On Walls Christmas season pop-up gallery exhibition, which in previous years has gone by the name of Santa’s Ghetto. There was a great atmosphere at the event. No doubt this was partly assisted by the deceptively strong cocktails being served, which led us to yet again repeat our mistake of equating “sweet drink” with “harmless drink”. But that’s another story. The show harbours a selection of prints […]

Studio Visit: Pete Watts

Brooklyn-based artist Pete Watts was nice enough to invite AM to come by his Greenpoint studio recently to check out what he’s been working on as of late. We first had the pleasure of seeing the Rhode Island School of Design graduate’s work at Joshua Liner Gallery’s 2010 summer group show (covered), and were certainly impressed by the intricately detailed graphite-drawn environments. Watts obsessively researches interesting natural and man-made structures, and then unifies specific aspects of each into images that are at once architectural, geological […]

When young […]
