Streets / Recap: 352walls (Gainesville)

Back in November of 2015, the city of Gainesville coordinated the beginning of 352walls (The Gainesville Urban Art Initiative project). Curated by Iryna Kanishcheva, the first edition of the event was recently completed while producing 11 murals by internationally recognized artists, plus 10 murals by local artists and a bunch of electrical boxes interventions throughout the Floridian city’s downtown. Some of the murals produced include a three step deconstruction of another mural previously done in Argentina by Franco Fasoli Jaz; a repetitive modular abstract piece by Elian Chali; the What Are the Aesthetics of Reinvestment […]

Streets: Waone / Interesni Kazki (Varkala, India)

Not long after the duo’s US debut show (covered), Interesni Kazki’s Waone flew to Varkala, India, where he painted his first black and white mural. The Ukrainian artist, known for his surreal public works, colorful paintings, and elaborate drawings, was able to fulfill his goal of creating a B&W mural, resulting in this striking wall being painted on a local rooftop with the help of his family and friends. Waone fell in love with the lines of rare engravings when he visited the library at the St. Ottilien Abbey in Germany back […]

It’s been quite a while since our last Streets: World Roundup feature, so here are some public works that you may have missed in the last several months. Leading things off is a piece by Os Gemeos at an undisclosed location that highlights the plight of the people affected by the catastrophic dam collapse that resulted in toxic mud flow destroying Bento Rodrigues region in Brazil due to the negligence of mining company Mariana MG. Other murals the caught our eye of late include Invader (Jersey City), […]

Streets: Interesni Kazki / Waone – “Eternal Recurrence” (Sicily)

After sharing one side of the silo painted by AEC, one half of the Interesni Kazki, we now have a look at the effort from his partner Waone. Keeping with the theme of Greek mythology, the Ukranian artist added imagery on his side of the structure that reference the Triskelion, a symbol of the sun and the passage of time, but also the symbol of Trinacria, Helios’ Island, or now modern Sicily. Helios was the solar god and also guardian of oaths, and responsible for he gift of sight. Discuss […]

Streets: Interesni Kazki / AEC – “Odysseus Escape From Polyphemus” (Sicily)

We are a sucker for murals painted on silos. Something about the curvature of the surface the awesome way the imagery usually stands out from the surrounding background takes things up a notch. This latest example is from AEC, one half of the Interesni Kazki duo, entitled Odysseus Escape From Polyphemus. The piece is a play on the famous Greek myth as you can see from the sheep and references the topic of relations between politics and mafia in the port area of Catania, Sicily where the mural […]

Working in a place with a much history and tradition, both pieces full of symbolism were heavily influenced by the local Aboriginal culture. Waone painted a piece titled Rainbow Serpent, […]
