Openings: Todd James – “King of the Wild Frontier” @ Gering & Lopez

Last Thursday night, Todd James (aka REAS) unveiled a new body of works at New York’s Gering & Lopez. Entitled King of the Wild Frontier, this series takes another step forward from his previous showing with the gallery. Separated into two major parts, Todd moves on from his traditional medium of paper and continues his Somali Pirates motif on canvas which brought an impressive new dimension to his work as his colors and line-work popped even more than before. The second portion of the show [...]

Teaser: Todd James – “King of the Wild Frontier” @ Gering & Lopez

Returning to NY for a showing at Gering & López, site of his show in early 2010, Street Market alumni Todd James will be presenting a whole new body of work on March 1st. King of the Wild Frontier will no doubt feature the artist otherwise known as REAS’ signature colorful and sardonic takes on various topics including perhaps politics and war. Discuss Todd James here.

Openings: “Pretty on the Inside” @ Paul Kasmin

Last week, AM attended the group exhibition curated by KAWS and Erik Parker, a unique project hosted by Paul Kasmin Gallery. The show Pretty on the Inside (teased) included works from seven American artists – Todd James, Tony Matelli, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, Karl Wirsum and of course, the two curators. The visually intense and almost organic feel of works served to focus the viewer on the raw beauty within. The show runs until August 19th, so make it a point to stop by if you’re [...]

Openings: “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA (First Look)

This morning, the Los Angeles MOCA lifted the veil of secrecy on its highly anticipated “Art in the Streets” exhibition.  This first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art is the brainchild of Jeffrey Deitch (along with associate co-curators Roger Gastman & Aaron Rose) and was certainly one of the first enticing possibilities that came to AM’s mind when we first heard of his unconventional hiring as MOCA’s director early last year. Despite the inevitable quibbling about who was and who wasn’t included [...]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Great Adventure” @ Galeria Javier López

Just hours ago, Todd “REAS” James’ show at Galeria Javier López opened it’s doors to the “Great Adventure”. It turns out, the adventure was a tongue-in-cheek way of referring to wars and the associated atrocities that come with it. Much like his show earlier this year in NY at Gering & López (covered), James’ cartoonish portrayal of the machinations of war include smiling tanks shooting out blood, funny-faced missiles romping around, nude female soldiers frolicking around in the mayhem, and much more. Seeing the chaos [...]

Teaser: Todd “REAS” James @ Galeria Javier López

On Wednesday, Todd James aka REAS’ will be opening his first solo show in Madrid at Galeria Javier López. Judging from the show card and sneak peeks, the work will be a continuation of his last solo earlier this year in New York at Gering & López. Those attending the show will see the Deitch Street Market alum’s vision of a “Great Adventure” sure to include soldiers, cartoonish tanks, bombs, blood, women, and more… Discuss Todd “REAS” James here.

Releases: Jose Parla x T.I. & REAS x B.o.B for Complex Magazine

Looks like Complex Magazine has got a nice little formula built up using great art and music again mashing up nice artistic combos of Jose Parla x T.I. (above) and REAS (Todd James) x B.o.B. (seen after the jump) for the cover of the coming August/September issue of the magazine (your choice). Complex of course aims to give you twice your bang for the buck as one can reverse the “maggie” to find another cover of Lindsay Lohan x KAWS on the flip-side. The issue will be [...]

Openings: “Brush Strokes” @ V1 Gallery

Last week, Copenhagen’s V1 gallery opened the stunning new show “Brush Strokes,” featuring the works of Todd James (aka REAS) and Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee). According to the V1 site, the title of the exhibition is a reference to the humorous NYC public-access TV show. McGee filled the gallery with several large scale installations — a text-heavy cluster of new style panels, another of only geometrics and another framed photos and paper pieces — as well as several smaller works, while James contributed a [...]

50 Parties Art Auction @ Ryan McGinness Studios

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending one of Ryan McGinness‘ exclusive 50 Parties events held at his SOHO studio. Given that all the major New York auction houses had held their fall sales during the week, it was appropriate that McGinness’ party that night was itself an auction – but one in which the artists themselves were the sellers, with no auction house taking a commission. Sixteen works were on the block, including pieces by David Ellis, Jose Parla, Cheryl Dunn, Todd “REAS” [...]
