The NY Art Book Fair is set to kick off tomorrow, September 30th running through October 3rd. Generously organized again by non-profit Printed Matter, the sixth iteration of the free and open to the public event will see more than 200 exhibitors, cementing itself as the world’s premier event for artists’ books, contemporary art catalogs and monographs, art periodicals, and artist zines. The gravity defying architecture of MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens is reason enough to attend. However, as an even greater incentive this year, Tauba Auerbach will be the Keynote Speaker on Saturday, October 1st from 2- 3:30 PM. The talented artist will discuss the central role of the book as her muse, evidenced from the debut of her then conceptual pop-up book [2,3] at last years fair (now available for delivery soon), as well as her uniquely enchanting exhibition A Book Is Not An X back in August which completely flipped the “book” as commonly perceived on its head.
Of particular note, Dashwood Books, known for being Ryan McGinley’s primary publisher, will unveil some intriguing new books at the fair from Tim Barber, Ai WeiWei, and Ari Marcopoulos, all also available online. And to raise money for the event in order to continue making it free to the public, a selection of prints have been released, one from Harmony Korine available here. These releases and speaking engagements represent the tip of the proverbial iceberg, so be sure to check it out if you’re local, if only for the undoubtedly insightful talk by Tauba on Saturday.
