Screenings: Invader – “Art4Space” (New York)

Tomorrow night (October 29), the French street bomber known as Invader & Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be premiering a special screening of ART4SPACE (covered) for fans in New York City. The great documentary featured at Pulse Miami follows Invader as he launched one of his signature mosaics into the Earth’s stratosphere. With his exhibition Palimpsest at Harvard’s Reischauer Institute (covered) still on view, the always ambitious Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opens The Standard Rendez-Vous at Zidoun & Bossuyt in Luxembourg. With the new show, we find Matsu pushing his unique combination of abstract, pop and traditional Japanese styles ever forward. Today, Banksy took his artist residency in New York straight to the hornet’s nest (aka Chelsea). Yes, the same Chelsea that houses some of the world’s most prestigious galleries. This past weekend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) opened its doors to unveil the much anticipated exhibition by KAWS. The show featured 70 works (old & new) at the historic institution and included both paintings and sculptures that spans some major milestones of the artist’s storied career to date. Next week, Masakatsu Sashie makes his New York debut with an exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. For now, we’ll bring you an inside look Sashie’s studio as he prepares for this show. From the looks of things it appears he will bring back his urban spheres and display the interesting perspectives on a society filled with modernism and consumerism. Two of street art’s finest have come together for a special collaboration for the cover of New York’s The Village Voice. Two variations of the cover were made – one with Banksy’s signature riot police surrounding one of Os Gemeos’ yellow characters and the other cover is the riot policeman in a sea of yellow figures each dressed in a vibrant outfit – some actually wearing shirts paying homage to some of Banksy’s greatest hits. AM recently stopped by the new studio space of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed). The Brooklyn-based artist was busy getting ready for his solo exhibition at Luxembourg’s Zidoun & Bossuyt that opened yesterday. It was great to see Matsu focusing more on larger paintings and also the return of his abstract “sundance” style that we’ve come to love. The exhibition runs from October 3rd until November 9th, so stop by if you’re in the area. Discuss Matsu here.
