Openings: Sas & Colin Christian – “Sas + Colin” @ Opera Gallery (NY)

AM attended the private opening for Colin and Sas Christian’s (interviewed) latest show Sas + Colin at New York’s Opera Gallery. As the title states, the main focus was the wife and husband collaborations which brought their unique talents together for a visually stunning exhibition. Sas utilized her hyper realistic painting styles to bring the futuristic subjects to life, while Colin brought the physical presence with his beautifully detailed fiberglass sculptures. Together in one setting, it was impressive to see the artistic talents which can only be […]

Charity / Releases: James Jean x OVM – Lotus War Silk Scarf

James Jean fans may remember the sold out fashion line which he created with Prada, but since then he’s taken a hiatus from fashion world to focus on his fine art career. Good news, James has been working on another project. Here’s a first look at the upcoming collaboration with Japan based company OVM. The first release of the future line with OVM is a gorgeous scarf featuring his signature Lotus War imagery from his show at Martha Otero. The scarf is made of premium […]

Installation: Ryan Travis Christian – “Sad Sacks” @ Guerrero Gallery

Tonight, May 12th, Ryan Travis Christian returns to Guerrero Gallery for the next installment of his works. In what looks like a continuation of works from his previous show last year at GG, Ryan moves to the main room with his classic use of blacks, whites and everything in between. This time, he expands his crazy visual patterns and distinct subject matter to include sex, parties, dreams and more. Look for a large but intricate multi-media installation that should be memorable to behold. Check it […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Women: The Blacklight Paintings” @ Standard NY’s Le Bain

Armory Week can get a little overwhelming with the number of formal fairs which one can attend. By the end of the week, we needed to blow off some steam. It’s a good thing Ryan McGinness knows how to throw a party/exhibition. Teaming up with Country Club x The Standard, Mr. McGinness transformed Le Bain (one of Manhattan’s hottest clubs) into a living gallery. Utilizing his blacklight techniques, he again converted the ladies of the brass pole into organic subjects to compliment the eye-popping artworks which […]

Studio Visits: Shepard Fairey – “Revolutions” @ Robert Berman Gallery

AM recently visited the studio of friend Shepard Fairey (featured) to preview his works for the coming show at Robert Berman Gallery in Los Angeles. As previously mentioned, Shepard is going back to his roots where he will focus on Obey’s his involvement in the music scene. From Punk, Rock to Rap, Shepard has created his fair share of iconic music and art collaborations. We got to preview not only his fine art HPM album covers, but also saw his duo album cover set, each containing […]

Armory Week ’11: Scope

Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Oh, did we mention that there was an artistic experiment that featured five fraternity boys stuck in a box for four hours with nothing but a window, a microphone, cases of beer, […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion. On Thursday night, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery launched an epic exhibition for one of AM’s favorites, José Parlá. Entitled “Walls, Diaries and Paintings”, the show (previewed) filled the entire gallery space with José’s calligraphic style. Utilizing the techniques and reference photos which he has accumulated over the years on his travels, Parlá created a […]

Openings: Ian Francis – “Fireland” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last night, Ian Francis (featured) unveiled his latest body of work Fireland at Joshua Liner Gallery. Exhibiting in his first New York solo, Mr. Francis again knocked it out of park, clearly dazzling the Armory week crowd that attended. Ian’s paintings demonstrated why many around the world draw inspiration from his creations. It was also exciting to see a number of varied mediums he choose to exhibit – ranging from canvas to charcoal to inks on paper. We also noted the further refinement of Ian’s already popular […]
