Streets/Installation: Nipper “Mission Directives” (Stavanger)

It’s no secret that people behind one of the oldest street art festivals, Nuart in Stavanger, always go for the artists with the freshest ideas and something to say. So, their newest project with the Bergen-based artist Nipper, is only a continuation of their worthy legacy to bring art out of museums, galleries and public institutions onto the city streets to become part of people’s everyday lives. Mission Directives consist of small scale installations that promote the sharing economy and citizen-led communication in public space. Significantly different to the large scale murals […]

Upcoming: Maya Hayuk – “Grow Room” @ Alice Gallery

On 3rd of March Maya Hayuk will be back at Alice Gallery in Brussels to open her third solo with the gallery – Grow Room. From the few preview images we’ve seen, the show will include more complex compositions from the Brooklyn-based artist. Through intricate patterns and lush colors, Hayuk creates paintings and murals that recall traditional Ukrainian crafts, airbrushed manicures, and mandalas. Both rebelliously psychedelic and strictly symmetric, her works balance between creating a visual illusion and reusing orthodox weaving patterns. The new pieces look to be further experimentations, […]

Showing: Pixelpancho – “Androidèi” @ Galleria Varsi

On the 19th of February, Galleria Varsi in Rome opened a solo show by Italian street artist Pixelpancho. For Androidèi, the Turin-born artist transformed the entire gallery into a setting of one of his familiar works. Known for large murals that incorporate elements of his country’s rich history combined with vintage, futuristic, and even steampunk elements, Pixelpancho approached installing this show in a similar manner. Turning the whole interior into a piece, where exhibited works on paper and canvas were only details of the greater installation, […]

Streets: St+art India 2016 (Delhi)

For the third consecutive year, St+art Festival in Delhi, India, showed its strength as a collaborative platform for street artists from India and around the world. With the main concept being Art for Everyone, the organizer’s primary objective was to make art accessible for wider audiences while having a positive impact on society. Over the period of two months, the invited artists changed the visual landscape of the city with art interventions in public spaces through murals, installations, performances, workshops, talks and screenings. Aside from working in public, as […]

Installation / Videos: Pejac – “Heavy Sea”

We’ve seen Pejac paint large indoor murals, small street pieces, window drawings, install sculptural works in public, create visual illusions on facades and walls, but we never seen him turn his paintings into reality. Until now. The Spanish artist just shared his latest project, Heavy Sea, titled after his watercolor painting from a few years ago depicting a lifesaving ring on top a tire dump. Recently, he came across a location that looked pretty much exactly like the one he drew, so he decided to re-create the image in […]

Installations: Ai Weiwei (Berlin, Prague)

Ever since Ai Weiwei moved to Berlin after Chinese authorities returned his passport in 2015, he’s been actively working towards raising awareness about the refugee crisis that is hitting Europe. After reporting from and opening a studio on the Greek island of Lesbos, closing down his exhibition in Copenhagen in protest at a new law that allows Danish authorities to seize valuables from asylum seekers, China’s most acclaimed contemporary artist got the world’s attention once again with his recent interventions. He recently opened his world touring Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads […]

From February 13th until March 14th, visitors will have the chance to explore six “chambers” filled with everything from tech-based mirror mazes to an ice cream truck, a lounge area with local […]

Streets: Ella & Pitr (Puerto Rico)

Continuing their ongoing series of sleeping giants murals, art duo Ella & Pitr recently finished a massive new piece in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Depicting a little baby peacefully sleeping with his mother by its side, the mural was created with the help of locals that volunteered to help the project. Ella & Pitr were invited by Santurce Ley Festival to paint one of their famous giant works in the Caribbean. With this series, the French artists turn rooftops, parking lots, and other large areas into cramped sleeping […]

Recap: Alex Katz – “Portraits” @ Galeria Javier Lopez

On February 5th, Galería Javier López in Madrid officially closed their exhibition by the New York artist Alex Katz. Portraits included a selection of works which brought the artist wide recognition, including some of his most recent pieces, both oil on canvas and studies on board. Katz’ unique style that distinguishes him from his contemporaries was the result of the influence of photography, cinema, television and advertising of the sixties. Using a large canvas format as a movie screen and trying to re-create similar aesthetics, his work has always been […]
