Previews: Futura – “NEW HORIZONS” @ Library Street Collective

Coming up on June 18th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be opening up a solo show by graffiti legend Futura. Entitled NEW HORIZONS, the exhibition will feature imagery that fans of the street pioneer have come to love – gyroscopes, nebulae, and other abstracted structures as well as some of his pointman characters. Openings: Joel Daniel Phillips – “Belongings” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Earlier this month, a show featuring new charcoal and graphite drawings on paper by Joel Daniel Phillips opened up at San Francisco’s Hashimoto Contemporary. Belongings comprises  of mainly four large-scale portraits interesting paired with solitary objects (on similarly shaped paper) that serves as an extension of their characters. The locally-based based artist references the “ever-expanding class distinctions of the Mid-Market area” with his work. Releases: Joao Ruas – “Verso” Book

Back in 2014, Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery successfully hosted a solo show from Joao Ruas entitled Verso (covered). This month, the Brazilian artist released a 64 page hardcover catalogue from the exhibition including a fold out center of his painting Cannae of You and Me. Shepard Fairey x Cleon Peterson – L.A. Public Library Card

Last month, the Los Angeles Public Library unveiled a new card designed by Shepard Fairey and Cleon Peterson. The first artist-designed, limited-edition library card made available at all 73 locations features an image of the historic Central Library, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2016. Upcoming: Nychos – “Ikon” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Coming up on June 25th, a new solo from Austrian artist Nychos will be opening at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Mirroring his works on the street, Ikon will features a series of paintings with his recognizable cartoonish dissected imagery. From the glimpses revealed on his Instagram, it looks like he will take aim at pop culture icons like Yoda, Darth Vader, Goofy, Knight Rider, Barbie, and Marilyn Monroe. Discuss Nychos here.

Streets: JR @ The Louvre (Part I)

Over the last week, JR (interviewed) has been working on his latest high profile project – painting the iconic pyramid at the Louvre. Studio Visits: Greg Simkins – “Beyond Shadows” @ KP Projects // MKG & Launch LA

Leading up to his show opening tomorrow night at KP Projects // MKG, we had a chance to take a peek at Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) prepping for the show in his studio. Entitled Beyond Shadows, the new solo will include detailed works focused on his surreal characters, some “drip script” pieces, and some new paintings of his favorite switchblade Stab E. Mack. Releases: James Jean – “Melon” Print

Next week, James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new print off his website in a time-limited manner, making it available for 12 hours starting at 8:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, May 25th and ending at 7:59 PM PDT. Melon was created to celebrate summer and will be sized at 27″ x 20″ (image size 24″ x 18″) with the price set at $200.
