Openings: Melissa Haslam @ Cerasoli-LeBasse

Looks like an emerging artist that we have been following, Melissa Haslam, has landed a show in LA. She opened in a group show called “Blender” last night at the new combined Cerasoli-LeBasse Gallery in the artsy Culver City district. The new gallery is a merge between Project: Gallery and the Cerasoli Gallery (formerly The Lab 101) and hopefully will help this Australian artist have more exposure to U.S. collectors. Her paintings usually include fashionably dressed women in interesting situations that hint of perhaps a […]

Openings: Brendan Monroe @ Galerie L.J. Beaubourg

Brendan Monroe’s show “Dwindle to a Tiptoe” (previously previewed) with Evah Fan just opened last Thursday in Paris. It seems that nowadays, more and more American artists that we are familiar with are showing internationally. Unfortunately, that makes it hard for the stateside AM crew to see the work in person, but Adeline from Galerie L.J. Beaubourg was nice enough forward some pics (right before opening we presume) for us to share with you all. As you can see, Brendan and Evah were enjoying themselves […]

Preview: Travis Louie & Kris Kuksi @ Shooting Gallery

One of our favorite artists, Travis Louie, is opening a three-person show tonight at the Shooting Gallery. Louie’s technique must be quite complicated as he is able to paint photorealistic images of his imaginary creatures. He will be sharing some of his “secrets” in a future feature with us, but in the meantime you can enjoy his paintings from this show after the jump. Sculptor extraordinaire Kris Kuksi will be one of the other artists exhibiting along with Louie. The intricacy of his work is […]

Openings: KMNDZ & Ekundayo @ Thinkspace

Judging from the crowd that showed up for the opening, KMNDZ & Ekundayo careers are going in an opposite direction when compared to the stock market right now.  Luckily we got there early and took some quick pics before it got too packed.  The two artists spent several days completely transforming Thinkspace and their hard work definitely paid off. Entering the gallery was like entering into their own little post-nuclear apocalyptic world. More pics after the jump.

Skool of Hard Knocks / Above

Street artist Above has forwarded us a video to his newest creation “Skool of Hard Knocks.” He was able to take some existing graffiti and transform it into a lesson for a classroom. Hopefully, he will be able to sit down with us soon and share some of his thoughts with our readers. Some before and after pics after the jump.

Preview: KMNDZ & Ekundayo @ Thinkspace

KMNDZ (above) & Ekundayo’s (below) two-man show is set to open this Friday, October 10th at Thinkspace in the Silverlake district. Arrested Motion was invited to take a look at the installation process last night, as well as take some photos to share with our readers. Those attending this show will be very impressed by the setup, as the two artists have completely transformed the space into the “Red Forest” (title of the show), the most radioactive place on earth. The paintings of the show […]

Baby Tattooville: Thomas Han

One of the most frequently asked questions about Baby Tattooville is “what do we get out of it?”  As our readers, you all have seen our coverage of some of this “loot” already, but over the next several weeks, AM will try to answer this question in more detail. The enigmatic Thomas Han turned out to be one of the surprise guests that showed up at the event this year and he did not come empty-handed. He along with Munky King (one of the sponsors) […]

Preview: Brendan Monroe @ Galerie L.J. Beaubourg

Over the last several shows, it is becoming more apparent that Brendan Monroe is in the middle of a transition period. Although it can be argued that all artists are constantly evolving and technically always in “transition,” most collectors have noticed less and less figurative elements to his work. For example, he rarely adds faces to his characters anymore. Perhaps it’s a conscious desire to distance himself from the “Low Brow” scene or perhaps it’s a subconscious progression into more abstract imagery. His upcoming show […]

Baby Tattooville 2008 Wrapup

Baby Tattooville concluded yesterday with a fantastic brunch at the Mission Inn as well as passing out of the “goodie” bags (more on this later). We must say that we thoroughly enjoyed covering this event and would recommend attending next year for anyone interested in this genre. Arrested Motion will be on hand to cover the event again in 2009 and we hope you have enjoyed our on-site blogging this year. Over the next several weeks, we will post some extra stories from this year’s […]

Opening: JR @ Lazarides

Famed street photographer JR opened his show in London last Friday. Much anticipation had built up over the last week because of the large installations he had put up in Soho (teased previously). We had wondered how his art would translate into the gallery setting, but it looks as though he was able to maintain the “feel” of his work quite nicely. By pasting his photographs onto uneven pieces of wood, aluminum, and even a mirror, he was able to emulate his famous style on […]
