Video: Fame Festival 2010 & Os Gemeos Photo-zine

In addition to AM’s coverage of the recently opened FAME Festival in Grottaglie, our friend at Babelgum, Laurence Billiet sent us this great video she took while in Italy for the festival. You’ve seen all the stills, so now take a look at some of the pieces from both 2009 and 2010 in wonderful moving pictures. Also, to make sure you catch every last tag, check out Hooked Blog’s excellent photo-zine featuring the works of Brazilian superstars Os Gemeos here. Discuss the FAME Festival here.

Showing: “Pop Surrealism” @ Carandente Museum, Italy

The “Pop Surrealism“ museum show AM recently previewed is now showing at the Carandente Museum in Spoleto, Italy. Put together by Rome’s Dorothy Circus Gallery, with assistance from New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery, the exhibition brings together 45 artists from the new contemporary scene, including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Tara MacPherson, Jeff Soto, Travis Louie and a wonderful piece from Joe Sorren. The majority of the work was loaned by collectors, with the lion’s share from owner of Dorothy Circus, Alexandra Mazzanti’s own collection. The Carandente […]

Preview: Joe Sorren – “Interruption” @ Grand Central Art Center

Last month, we brought you a look at some of the amazing sculptural work that will be exhibited during Joe Sorren’s (featured) “Interruption” retrospective. As the November opening continues to gets closer, it’s now time to take a look at the some of the paintings that will be featured at the California State University Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) show. As we noted before, Joe’s first museum show will not only feature past seminal and famous works from the master painter’s illustrious career thus […]

Previews: Craww ‘Droodlings’ @ Electrick Sheep, Newcastle

South Yorkshire artist Craww picks up his tools and treks to Newcastle for his debut solo show “Droodlings” at Electrick Sheep Gallery on October 14th. The exhibition promises a mixture of acrylic works on paper, canvas, found materials and collage, as well as a selection of limited edition prints. Craww caught AM’s eye earlier this year with his delicate figurative works, which contain a healthy mix of dark and dreamy surrealism in their narrative.  If you like your art to tell a story, with a […]

Preview: Mark Warren Jacques “I’m Here Now” @ Gallery Hijinks

Mark Warren Jacques announces his formal arrival literally in San Francisco with his solo show “I’m Here Now,“ opening this week at Gallery Hijinks, and also metaphorically in the context of the wider art-world. AM has been keeping tabs on the artist, who was based in PDX before his relocation to the bay area. We’ve watched him go from strength to strength, with a series of both solo and group exhibitions over the last couple of years. Since we interviewed Mark around the time of […]

Studio Visits: Nick Walker – “In Gods We Trust” @ Art Sensus Gallery

The time is almost upon us for the opening of Nick Walker’s latest London solo exhibition “In Gods We Trust” at Art Sensus Gallery. AM almost spat our tea when we opened the envelope containing the invitation to the exhibition this week – the lavishly produced document is printed in gold leaf and apes the style of what is surely the most widely dispersed of books familiar to many a traveller – the Gideons Bible. Expect political and religious satire to run throughout the show, […]

Installation: MOMO “Better Than 2009″ @ Anno Domini

Here’s an exhibition we’ve been looking forward to… Conceptually astute graffiti and street artist MOMO was in residence for a week working on his installation at San Jose’s Anno Domini.  AM brings you a behind the scenes glimpse of what’s on offer for his first US solo show, playfully entitled “Better Than 2009”, which opened Friday October 1. What we love about MOMO is the daring use of color and space within his work. If you didn’t read this recent article in the New York Times […]

Preview: Mark Whalen / Kill Pixie “Paralleled Opposites” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

AM just got a peek at the new paintings that Mark Whalen (you may also know him as his alter-ego Kill Pixie) is presenting on Saturday October 9th at Merry Karnowksy Gallery in Los Angeles, and we had to share some of the geometric landscape goodness with you! Mark’s latest body of work is entitled “Paralleled Opposites”, perhaps as a recognition of how his artistic journey and career to date has developed from his graffiti beginnings into the contemporary fine artist we see today. Whalen’s […]

Preview and Giveaway: “Selections from The New World” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Earlier this year, AM brought you coverage of Corey Helford Gallery’s “Art From The New World” summer exhibition at Bristol’s City Museum and Art Gallery in the UK. It was an exciting exhibition and a rare chance for UK art lovers to meet the group of artists in one place on our side of the pond. Since the doors opened, over 60,000 visitors attended the exhibit to get a taste of the art. Now it’s time for LA to have the favor returned. A selection […]

Openings / Streets: FAME Festival 2010

For the last two years, there’s only one place even the most half-hearted of street art fan should be in September and that’s the picturesque town of Grottaglie, in the foot of Italy, and this year is no exception as the town again provides the canvas for curator Angelo Milano’s FAME Festival. As with previous years, Angelo has invited a stylistically and geographically diverse selection of renowned and, at least for now, less recognized artists to decorate the walls of his hometown as they see […]
